Do you have a film/play/series from your youth/younger life that you loved.?

I recently saw that ‘Love for Lydia’ from 1977 was being televised. I remember absolutely loving it and over the last 47 years just hoping to see it again.

I started it tonight and I am so disappointed it is nothing like I remember. It’s in black and white, It’s set in about 1920s when I seem to remember that it was the 1970s. Mel Martin who I really liked in it has hardly said a word.

I do remember the Editor in the Newspaper office and that’s about all.

I may just give up and my memory of the love affair featuring M M and another character may just be a figment of my imagination.

I wonder if I saw ‘The Greengage Summer’ again, which I also loved, whether that would be a let down.

I was scared out of my wits by The Exorcist aged 18 so was a bit dubious when my 16 year olds wanted to watch it. The only thing that upset them was the amount of swearing 🙄

Anyone like Out of Africa? With Meryl Streep and Robert Redford
Or Falling in Love with Meryl Streep and Robert De Niro
I love both of these films

Witzend I too loved Blithe Spirit.

I have watched every version of The 39 Steps and videod it recently with Rupert Penny Jones in it. I think I liked the Kenneth More one the best.

I love a film hardly anyone else ever seems to have heard of - The Tamarind Seed, starring Omar Sharif and Julie Andrews in her first ‘non sweet’ role. It’s partly set in Barbados, with Omar Sharif as a Russian trying to recruit JA as a spy - or is he? Parts of it really conjure up a feeling of Cold War/KGB dread, and there are some brilliant twists.
I have it on DVD and re-watch now and then.

Two others I’d always watch again are Whistle Down The Wind, and Blithe Spirit.

I remember -
Lovejoy
Shoestring Howard's Way
Bonanza
Wagon Train
Cheyenne
Sugarfoot

and lots of those Western series.

Nandalot LovesBach I remember Sam. One abiding memory is of his uncle (played by Ray Smith), being given his ‘spends’ by his wife after he’d handed over his wages. If she hadn’t demanded he gave her the money he would have drunk it away. I wish they’d repeat it.

Thanks SkippyO I will check out YouTube 👍

There is a strange tv series I saw about 20+ years ago and it has remained very clearly on my mind. Someone on GN also remembered it sometime back. I wanted to read the book but it was only a tv series. See if you remember it. I warn you it is very strange, just the sort of thing I love.

Friday night mix of travellers on a train going home. Somewhere down the line they go through a tunnel and the train crashes. The surviving passengers escape and continue through the tunnel and emerge somewhere no one recognises.

In addition some of the survivors find underground tunnels and there they find animals who have fallen into the tunnels and can’t get out. I remember pigs and I think a lion or tiger.

I know it sounds mad but ~I was hooked and can’t remember the end. 🤪

I remember a mad series called the Tripods which they withdrew before the last episode !

I loved Day of the Triffids too. I have odd tastes.

Doomwatch with a very young Robert Powell …..

How could I have forgotten "Upstairs, Downstairs" ! Loved it.

grandMattie Mon 26-Aug-24 06:09:19

FLeurpepper, I think the third girl in “Rock Follies” was Charlotte Cornwall -John le Carre’s sister. DH loved that series.

@NanKate There a several listings for second-hand DVDs of The Greengage Summer 1961 from UK Ebay in the £4 to £7 price range.

These are set priced items, not auctions, so pretty straightforward if you already have dealings with Ebay.

It is also available on YouTube in very good quality.

Deedaa I’ve just looked for the DVD of the Greengage Summer on Amazon and it costs £24 😳Is that what you paid please ?

Deedaa Fri 23-Aug-24 22:29:51

I recently bought DVDs of Greengage Summer and Blue Remembered Hills. Both of them seem just as good as I remembered. I always watch Brief Encounter when it's on and, one afternoon, I was surprised to find my 45 year old son watching it with me and thoroughly enjoying it. His usual fare is Guardians of the Galaxy and similar!

Jaberwok Thu 22-Aug-24 11:40:11

Almost all the afore mentioned. So many lovely memorable films along with their casts. A Bouquet of barbed wire, When the boat comes in Sam, Greengage Summer, Brief Encounter and so on. I do wish all the TV repeats could include some of these.

Flambards

For those Paul Temple fans you can access Paul Temple and the Gregory Affair now on BBC Radio Sounds. I down loaded it onto my smart phone and I may listen to it all over again. 👍

For me it's Paint Your Wagon, fort VHS tape I bought. Who knew Clint Eastwood could sing?

I loved Adam Adamant, and would like to see that again. Perhaps it’s on Youtube. (Reminder to self - have a look)

I saw the actor Gerald Harper in Kendals in Manchester coming down the escalator about 50 years ago. I was surprised how slight he was and he was quite gingery in colour.

Rock Follies! I remember my mother being all sniffy and disapproving! Also an adaptation of Nana had the same effect.

Rock Follies came straight to mind. It was a TV series in the mid 70s starring Rula Lenska, Julie Covington? And another actress. Can’t remember much about it, but liked the songs and would love to see it again to see if it was any good 😂. Off to google it!
Loving reading the other recollections.

I absolutely loved Rock Follies.

My first ever English film in a cinema was 'A Taste of Honey' with Rita Tushingham, when I was in the 6th Form.

What amazes me about memories and change of recollections, or rather, interpretation- is how we kids actually were brainwashed through American series, that the Western Settlers were the goodies, and the native Indians, the baddies. I just can't believe we couldn't see the truth.

Love for Lydia has been mentioned on another forum I’m on . It seems that many young men were in love with Mel Martin back then ( and quite rightly). It certainly left a lasting impression on many people. Most of the largely unknown cast went on to have glittering careers.

There’s a review if it on utube called Look Look and Look again. It isn’t a series that I saw but I think I’ll dip into it. I like to disappear into children’s fantasy every now and again. There’s a gap in my education with this one!

I've confused Children of the Stones with Escape into Night MayBee70, they both feature creepy stones!

I was younger and much more impressionable with Escape into Night.

Another possibility to fill a gap in your education smile

Paul Temple and Steve. I loved this programme

BlueSapphire Sun 18-Aug-24 12:03:28

The Paul Temple series on the radio in the 1950s, absolutely loved it, and sat as close to the radio as I could to hear every word! And the amazing music at the end. When we lived in Australia in about 1990 I came across it on ABC radio, (the Australian BBC equivalent), and enjoyed it all over again!

Remember watching a play on tv in the 60s, think it was The Victorian Chaise Longue, by Marganita Laski; a bit spooky but loved it. Would love to watch it again.

pinkprincess Sat 17-Aug-24 20:28:04

Tenko was another series I enjoyed. My DS2 was aged about 9 at the time and loved watching it with me, he could recall that happened in the previous episode as sometimes forgot!
He was always well behaved on the days it was on, in case I sent him to bed before he could see it.
