On BBC 2 and iplayer. I've just watched the 1st of 3 episodes and thoroughly recommend it. Very informative and an eye opener and I confess to being pretty ignorant of his story apart from knowing he was a comedian. He seems very sincere and humble as is his wife. I might just wath the 2 episodes tonight.

hahaha Zelensky, sincere and humble, he is not, a comedian he is for sure. Have you seen him dancing. Just type in on YouTube 'Zelensky dancing', that's who he really is! This guy is an actor, and a good one at that, he has received millions upon millions of pounds, and yet, the pensioners will lose their winter fuel payments, a good comedian act is ever there was one.

This again! Pensioners on Pension Credit - the poorest - will still get the winter fuel allowance! Were you complaining when the last government were killing the disabled? Did you complain about kids dying in substandard housing? I thought not. I am sick to death of entitled people who don’t give a toss about those who are really in need, be it our own, migrants or people in warzones.

This is not an act. This war is not pretend.

Starmer says he had useful talks with Biden, so why hasn’t Ukraine got the missiles they so desperately need? VZ must be desperate to get extra support NOW.

IMO Starmer is turning out to be a loser all round. His constant platitudes (hope I have got the right word) mean nothing.

If Putin wins he will move onto another country. It’s so worrying.

Zuzu thankyou for the link. It was a very long but enlightening read.

This series is one of the best we have seen for a very long time. Thank goodness Ukraine has had a leader like Zelenskyy who is not only sincere and determined but also a good actor. He has played the part of President in a time of utmost need. Like all great leaders the need to be able to inspire and encourage is what is necessary. He is doing just that. Putin has to be stood up to. So far his interference in the unity of Europe is well known and Brexit delighted him as his admirer Farage will be aware of. So any comparison of loss of the winter fuel payment which we are told will be compensated for in the next rise in state pension and our contribution to Ukraine is unbelievable. I’ve seen Zelensky’s talent as a comic dancer and actor which he refers to as his previous life. This talent to act out the role play which is necessary has been what has kept Ukraine going. Look at that wonderful video he made for the people of Ukraine after that first terrible bombing and military assault. He gathered his cabinet around him and simply told them that each of them was there and he the President was there. The way he said it was so full of strength and comfort and like all great leaders the ability to act was necessary. The foreign correspondent on the programme described that short video as being the moment that changed Zalensky from a good leader to a great one.

Thanks for sharing that, it looks really interesting. I’ll try to watch it.

he only has to demand and we will be forthcoming
You certainly have that spectacularly wrong.
We ( and the whole western world) don’t give nearly enough to Ukraine. 😡

SallyatBaytree Sun 08-Sept-24 17:39:55

"2 notoriously corruption regimes "
Not in my opinion . Its time the rest of the world stood up to Putin
Zelensky needs support not criticism. And money we as a country are spending is a small proportion of our wealth.

Zuzu Sun 08-Sept-24 16:15:16

There's a page on Wiki listing what/how much each country has given to help Ukraine. I'm personally ashamed my country, the US, allowed Hitler one day of existence, and think something should have been done about Putin and other tyrants around the world years ago.

I disagree with everything you've said Biglouis. Putin will not stop at Ukraine.

As Zelensky said to the West "You provide the weapons and the Ukrainians do the dying." He could not have been more succinct.

Europe is lucky that his country is a buffer zone. Without them we will be next.

I really admire him.

Soniah Sun 08-Sept-24 14:29:45

And what do you think will happen if we don't support Ukraine? These are dangerous times and we need to be proactive before they get out of hand biglouise

Nano14 Sun 08-Sept-24 12:59:55

biglouis

I fid him rather annoying with his carefully curated "tough man" image. He treats thos country as though we were Amazon prime and keeps mugging us for more and more weapons. He has only to demand and we will be forthcoming. He seems determined to drag NATO into WWIII.

I was very angry when I heard in the king's speech that we will continue to support Ukraine. There is far too much money flowing out of this country to be squandered on foreign wars and foreign warlords

I dont recall any referendum asking whether I wanted to sub out a war between two notoriously corrupt regimes.

We would now be ruled by Germany if not for our allies in world war 1!
Where would we have been without supplies and weapons from the USA?
Where would we have been without our allies fighting for us?
There but for the grace of God go I.

Kikibee Sun 08-Sept-24 11:54:53

I am sorry Biglouis but I find your comment very narrow minded. It is akin to standing by and watching a bully beat someone without intervening because you feel that he is not worth helping. We are a compassionate nation and I am so proud that we stand up for other nations whose residents are being killed by the actions of a tyrant. I have watched all 3 of the programs and recommend them to understand how Zelensky is working so hard to protect his country. The burden if providing aid is shared with many countries and is much less than spent in Iraq or Afghanistan where we were also “helping” other countries without any gain to ourselves as a nation.

I was so glad I watched the series. An amazing man to go from being an actor/comedian to standing up Putin. He's obviously an incredibly strong character but you can see that, unsurprisingly, it's taking its toll on him and his wife. Sorry Biglouis but I can't agree with your opinion, we mustn't stop supporting Ukraine with whatever they need until there's a solution. It's just a shame we all saw it coming but we dithered until it became full blown invasion.

Thankyou so much for recommending this series Tanith.. I have found it really enlightening, not having been entirely sure of the historical background to the war.. what an extraordinary man Zelensky has proved to be.. I've just seen the first of the series and am looking forward to the others..

tanith Fri 06-Sept-24 11:41:52

I’m glad you enjoyed it I’ve still the last episode to watch. I do believe he is genuinely defending his country as he is not and never has been the aggressor.

nanaK54 Fri 06-Sept-24 10:16:53

Thank you for the 'heads up' tanith we have now watched all three episodes, what a remarkable man he is.

Sorry BigLouis, but I don’t agree with a single thing you’ve said.

grandtanteJE65 Thu 05-Sept-24 15:47:41

I was trying to answer Biglouis but the quote didn't work, sorry!

grandtanteJE65 Thu 05-Sept-24 15:46:53

You are entitled to your opinion, although I, like many others, do not share it.

However, I cannot help but wish that someone had stopped Hitler when he annexed Austria - instead of trying to reach a compromise with him.

I do not know ,if we will all be dragged into WWIII or not - I devoutly hope not, but if we are, then I shall blame Putin, not Zelensky, and the USA for acting as if theys till believe in the phrase they have not dared use this time around "Europe's war"

And honestly, I would rather we are dragged into a world war than see everyone make no attempt to stop a dictator- if Putin succeeds in taking Ukraine, believe you me, he will not stop there!

Aveline Thu 05-Sept-24 13:01:53

Should we have just let the Germans overrun Europe in 1930s? Sometimes you have to stand up to bullies.
