Didn’t know whether to post this under TV or News.

Anyone else watch the documentary last night about Al Fayed’s abuse of young, female member of Harrods staff?

He just seemed to pick young, attractive new members of staff, have them moved into PA jobs working for him, and subsequently use them for his own sexual gratification.

It seemed to be an open secret, and nothing was ever done about it.

Marina Hyde in the Guardian online has an article about the 'enablers', without whom he could not have offended with impunity on that scale. Apparently the Times had a similar themed one recently.

Yes it was Tuesday’s Times 2.
I think there will be a lot more to reveal about the enablers and those in power at the time, who did nothing to stop him.

Two articles on BBC online this morning. One is about a complaint to the GMC, about the doctors who carried out those intimate examinations, the other is, I think, a live stream from an interview with some of the women.

A 15 year old working in Harrods ?

The Guardian states the 15 year old claimed she was assaulted at the store, doesn't say she worked there.

Point taken Oreo, but 'Ch..... Whispers, ( can we still say that, or is it racist?) if the victim actually reported it to the Police?

Oreo Tue 24-Sept-24 16:24:23

Sadly quite a few politicians were embroiled in asking questions for cash, I wonder if secretly it still goes on.

In the 1960's and early 1970's, you could leave school and go to work at the age of 15. So yes, GNs a 15 year old could work in Harrods.

Al Fayed didn’t buy the store until the 1980’s sometime.

The Tory politicians should not have accepted bribes
Oh I agree, but it does show the type of person he was and the types he associated with.
No doubt he paid others very well to keep quite about the whole disgusting business.
I hope they are brought to light.

He was an awful man, did he not make his wealth in the arms trade

MissInterpreted Tue 24-Sept-24 15:02:25

Exactly, J52. It goes a long way to showing the type of character he was.

GranofH , abuse is about power and secrets and generally takes place under everyone’s noses.
Some abusers may come across as charmers, but it doesn’t mean that they are.

I don't think it was claimed that she was working in Harrods.

Don’t !

BBC news website

“In the early 1990s, a government investigation concluded he had lied when he bought Harrods. He deployed dirty tricks against Tiny Rowland, his rival in buying the business, and was even accused of stealing items from his safety deposit box at the store.
A few years later, he caused the downfall of Tory politicians when he went public about bribing them to ask questions for him in parliament. He was not a man to be crossed.”

Regardless of anything else, I dot think this describes a nice and honourable man.

Wyllow3 Tue 24-Sept-24 14:14:35

Checked it out in Sky article.

The 15 year old girl accused him of indecent assault in 2008.

A women accused him of rape in 2013

MissInterpreted Tue 24-Sept-24 13:58:20

The girl in question did report the alleged rape to the police, although no charges were brought. I'd say that was more than just 'Chinese whispers'.

Anniebach Tue 24-Sept-24 13:41:25

Thank you Oreo

Al Fayed raped a 15 year girl ?

Maremia Tue 24-Sept-24 12:55:18

'Nice men' do not have sex/rape 15 year olds.

welbeck Tue 24-Sept-24 12:02:15

so, do you think they are all lying ?
all of them ?

GranofH Tue 24-Sept-24 11:58:55

@Bluebelle .. I do still think he was a nice man, I have never met any of the women who are accusing him so I can't have an opinion on them. You're right it was a small community and they don't have their sins tattooed on their forehead but one thing for sure is as a small community we all knew each other and secrets are very hard to keep, people would have noticed if someone suddenly changed or became scared to be in his quarters alone for example...
