This biopic may appeal to fans of Leonard Cohen, like me. I've watched a couple so far. It's about his time spent writing on the Greek Island of Hydra, which became a kind of haven to artists, poets and writers in the '60s. . It does switch between there and his native Montreal at times. Essentially it's mostly how he meets and falls in love with his neighbour on the island, Norwegian Marianne Ihlen, who inspired the song and was to become his lover, companion and muse. How their relationship developed when she was temporarily abandoned by her neglectful and abusive fellow Norwegian writer husband after recently giving birth to their son.

Yes I saw this some time ago.. quite heartbreaking really.. I'm glad he visited her before she died.. thank you for pointing it out I'll watch it again..

This was interesting. I felt sorry for her son, though.

It's a drama, with actors playing the parts. Not the same as the documentary, which was on a while back

Sorry, didn't read your post properly. The documentary was interesting and this will be too.

As a long-time Leonard Cohen fan, I will definitely be watching this. In fact I may be put it on right now - it's pouring down here, so that's my excuse for watching telly in the afternoon!

I've been lucky enough to see him perform live twice. On both occasions he was absolutely superb. He could hold the audience in the palm of his hand just by tilting his ubiquitous hat ... and then he sang. Just sublime.

I'm not sure he actually visited her? He wrote to her and suggested that he wouldn't be long in following her to the grave, which was prescient as he died about 3 months after her.

I've loved his poetry and music since I was 17 and very much enjoyed the ITVX series, although the length of commercial breaks is infuriating.

I am a Leonard Cohen fan too and I have his albums, he was mesmerising. His son, Adam has his own albums and he sounds just like his Dad. I enjoyed reading the book 'I'm Your Man" all about Leonard's life by Sylvie Simmon.s

Where can I watch this please?
Thanks from another fan!

It’s on the ITVX app.

I saw the original version with Leonard and Marianne several years ago. A real love story. Have always been a fan and actually saw him perform a couple of times.

Yes you're absolutely correct Outcast.. my memory failed me.. he sent an email and died 4 months later.. I love his lyrics and voice but he must have been difficult to live with.. apparently the 50 love letters between them were sold for £870.000 to help secure Axel junior's future..

Yes, I've seen this before. Love Leonard Cohen and seen him a few times in 70's. Still love his music. Love The Partisan and Who by Fire along with Suzanne et al

Yes it was documentary I watched.

I would love to have seen him perform live but never managed it. He played in Paris in 2013 but the ticket prices started at 185 euros to which would be added the travel and overnight costs and I couldn't afford it.

The Performance at the Barbican is my go to on You Tube.

Dare I say it? He's one who improved as he got older.

Cambia Mon 21-Oct-24 16:37:31

He definitely got better with age and I think became a nicer person too. My son bought us all tickets to see him live and he was absolutely fantastic. My husband played Suzanne to me at age 16 and I have been hooked ever since!
PS his son Adam is pretty good too! Saw him in Montreal (Leonard’s home city), live at the jazz festival a few years ago. Pretty gorgeous too!

Thank you for the tip off, Terribull. We went to see LC at the O2 in 2013. It was a wonderful evening. A couple of days after he died we went to see Rufus Wainwright, the father of LC’s daughter’s child, in concert. He had recently said he would never sing ‘Hallelujah’ again in concert but that he would make an exception for that evening. The whole evening was so emotional.

Thanks for the tip. Not heard of this. Will watch. Love Leonard Cohen. Sadly never saw him live. Did see Rufus Wainwright at kenwood in London. He was gorgeous.
