The new series of Shetland starts on November 6th at 21.00 on BBC1 and iPlayer. Ian Hart and Vincent Regan, both well kent faces are in it, as well as the returning Ashley Jensen (Ruth), Alison O’Donnell (Tosh), Steven Robertson (Sandy) and Lewis Howden (Billy).
I was not a fan of the previous series so am hoping for both an improved storyline and acting this time.

Where is Tosh’s baby?

The Perez series of programs used to be mainly about life and people on Shetland, plus history of those people. This series is mainly about incomers and what has happened off the island.
We're not keen, but yes Noah is delightful.

Does anyone else think that the scriptwriters are setting up the possibility of a relationship between D I Calder and the widowed father of the little boy, to bring a bit of a love interest into the programme?

I was thinking exactly the same..

Oh, I wouldn’t have thought so.

To me, he looks quite old.

I wondered if he was the boy’s actual father. Could she (Annie) have had a relationship with the analyst boss who used cocaine, and she had Noah, then somehow went back to Shetland and pretended the baby was Ian’s ?

Or perhaps not!

confused

I agree. This storyline isn't working out very interesting somehow. Maybe I'm too used to bingeing and struggle to remember what's going on from week to week.

Parsley3 Fri 06-Dec-24 09:59:36

OK. Hopefully, the storylines for Shetland will improve.

He's had to apologise publicly for several nasty things he's said on Twitter. I don't want to repeat them but it certainly put me off Douglas He shall.

Parsley3 Fri 06-Dec-24 08:44:45

Oh, what did he say? I missed that.

Aveline Fri 06-Dec-24 08:41:39

I'm more than happy to accept humour wherever it appears in life!
I'd already gone off the actor who played Perez after some of the unpleasant things he'd been saying online. I was glad to see him replaced.

Wee Noah is certainly the star of this series. It's a pity he is surrounded by eejits of adults who haven't the skill to get him to open up about what he saw. There is great potential in the relationship between Tosh and her boss but we may have to accept that there will be humour involved. Gorgeous Perez didn't go in for matey chit chat with his colleagues.

I'm still enjoying Shetland and like the way the relationship between the two women is developing. Some good natured teasing going on.
However, the real star for me is the wee boy Noah. What an actor. His sad little face is heart wrenching.

I used to really enjoy this prog as much for the vies and the insights into the life there as much as Perez but I'm not enjoying it. Tosh is lovely - give her he lead and forget the main one shose name escapes me - I find her very aggressive.

So many male characters in this, haven't a clue who half of them are! Very confusing.
But that little boy is the best actor in the whole cast!

I totally agree! Well done that little boy! smile

I’m enjoying it. I only started watching it last year so I have no knowledge of Perez who is fondly mentioned. I was a new arrival to the series at the same time as Ashley Jensen and I like her character.

My only misgiving in episode 2 was the harsh way she told the little boy his mother was dead. Surely it wasn’t her responsibility to tell him and it should have been left to a family member. At least if Tosh had broken the news the little boy knew her but Ruth was a complete stranger.

I totally agree Grannynannywanny, I thought this whole episode was really badly depicted, what could have been a moving emotional episode was just trashed with inexperienced police women carelessly handling a scene that would be difficult for a child to live through. Doug had a mature way of handling these things, the 2 women don't, quite the opposite, they act dramatically & this makes them look emotionally naive & less interesting. I want to like the programme, but it needs to find its way better 1st, a young woman and another who has some sort of rough history just aren't interesting enough. I'll keep watching for a while though, but I wouldn't if the scenery wasn't great.

Series 10 has already been commissioned.

I am hoping that the storyline greatly improves by the next episode.

Do you have to know who's boss as long as the crime is solved? Maybe it's a female thing. I've had terrific female bosses none of whom have had to stamp their authority or made it obvious to outsiders who the boss actually is.

vegansrock Sat 16-Nov-24 06:22:30

I like the two women but can’t work out which one is supposed to be the boss .

Ilovedogs22 Fri 15-Nov-24 17:38:58

I just cannot stand Shetland without Perez & certainly won't watch it again untill they either being Perez back or bring in a strong believable & authentic lead detective (male or female).
Those two drippy women simply won't do!
Particularly Ashley Jenson, she has the presence of a washed-up jellyfish. I couldn't even believe that she could find a monkey at the safari park with MONKEY written on his bottom!
Pardon my rantyness & shrewyness too. 🤔

Sparklefizz Fri 15-Nov-24 11:52:57

Is it just me but the scripts for this series are pretty awful? I feel it's just limping along and badly done - there's no way a police officer like Ruth would just baldly announce to an obviously traumatised child that his mum was dead - there was no family support with him or social worker.

The old man with the campervan is standing in full and open view on a barren landscape watching through binoculars the place he finds suspicious. How could he possibly be more obvious??

I am only watching it because there's no more Wolf Hall until Sunday. It's irritating and dire.

pascal30 Fri 15-Nov-24 09:28:45

Having watched the second part I do think it is improving and the storyline is becoming more interesting..

My problem with Shetland is the number of elderly men with white beards. I find it difficult to follow when they all look the same :-)
