The new series of Shetland starts on November 6th at 21.00 on BBC1 and iPlayer. Ian Hart and Vincent Regan, both well kent faces are in it, as well as the returning Ashley Jensen (Ruth), Alison O’Donnell (Tosh), Steven Robertson (Sandy) and Lewis Howden (Billy).
I was not a fan of the previous series so am hoping for both an improved storyline and acting this time.

Yes, I think he did.

He felt he'd taken the part of Pérez as far as it could go.

I think Hensall left of his own volition- he wasn't made to go.

I watched it and thought it was ok- may stick with it.

According to a comment made by a viewer to a television critic Henshall was like a 'grumpy potato in a pea coat.' I wish they would change the Island; same empty winding roads, bleak landscape and a lot of rain. Perhaps so many murders because there is little else to do.

I thought it was good, with a joined up plot.
I like the two lead women not quite Cagney and Lacey I agree, especially as "Tosh" only has about two facial expressions but IMO much better than Henshall, in his Black Peacoat hands in his pockets looking like he doesn't want to be there.

Last night's episode was quite intriguing, will keep watching! Rather a lot of blood, though.

I fell asleep 😴 but I do enjoy it.

At least it is a plot which I can follow. With many TV dramas I get totally lost with so many plot strands and characters. I like Tosh and am warming to Calder, I have always considered her a good actress.

I think what might be missing is the rather brooding atmosphere of the previous series with Dougie Henshall. They had a certain melancholy which suited the bleak scenery and he suited the atmosphere of that too.

This could turn into just another fairly good cop programme but it's lost that 'je ne sais quoi'

I like it too as in watchable not brilliant. Just see it as different from the first series and haven't read the books so take it as it comes.
I have always liked Tosh and warming to Calder a bit more slowly: tonight she had a very strong opening sequence, in terms of "gelling" together, yes thats beginning to happen.

We both enjoyed it this evening. Will keep watching.

Allira Wed 06-Nov-24 22:07:04

It was good.

For a place with only about 23,000 inhabitants, it seems to have a disproportionate number of murders!

I enjoyed the last series and will be watching this one too. I can’t believe people are sneering at the fact there are two women heading the show. Is this the 1950s? I’ve visited Shetland and loved it. Hope to return.

It's not the fact that it is two women, it's because it's not as good!

Cagney and Lacey, Scott and Bailey 👍
McIntosh and Calder? 🤔 Not yet gelled.
I'll give it another chance.

😁

Unfortunately, I don't think it's on one of the mainstream channels. What a pity.

Ohh thank you Allira, an early Christmas present. I shall puruse his rugged image whilst Mr Ilovedogs22 is out flirting with the ladies in Asda. 👍

Obviously I'm in a minority but I like Ashley Jensen and also the actress playing Tosh. I have to say that the scenery is such that I definitely don't ever want to go to Shetland but I suppose it's a nice change from gritty city based cop shows

I am even more in the minority then, I'm not that keen on Dougie Hensall but really like Tosh.

Calendargirl Wed 06-Nov-24 06:54:24

Tosh wasn’t in the books.

It’s her expression that is annoying, a sort of sneer and wide open eyes.

I shall watch it, but maybe not ‘live’, depends what else is on.

That's good to know Allira, as long as Douglas hasn't been hung- out to dry completely for saying something that''s been deemed unacceptable in this strange, wokery age! Even my good but old-school type husband is wary of saying the wrong thing for fear of causing any offence.
It's becoming like George Orwell's book '1984" where citizens could be accused of hate-speech & thought -crimes ect!!! Potty! 🥴

Allira Tue 05-Nov-24 11:37:00

I thought Douglas Henshall was miserable
Dour perhaps? Enigmatic. Strong and silent.

Allira Tue 05-Nov-24 11:35:05

I had to do a bit of detective work to track him down Ilovedogs but we may see him again soon:

I can't watch Shetland anymore!
It's complete tosh now literally!
I really miss Douglas Henshall as the brooding lead. The two dreary, needy women are so boring & whiny.
Why on earth was Douglas replaced, he was perfect. Such a shame. 😒

No I think she's better. I thought Douglas Henshall was miserable.

Summerfly Wed 30-Oct-24 22:11:24

I enjoy Shetland, it’s not the same without Douglas Henshaw, (he really made the programme for me) but I’ll keep watching.
