The new series of Shetland starts on November 6th at 21.00 on BBC1 and iPlayer. Ian Hart and Vincent Regan, both well kent faces are in it, as well as the returning Ashley Jensen (Ruth), Alison O’Donnell (Tosh), Steven Robertson (Sandy) and Lewis Howden (Billy).
I was not a fan of the previous series so am hoping for both an improved storyline and acting this time.

Are we bothered about male detectives' children?

pascal30 Thu 12-Dec-24 18:27:35

Allira

I hear Series 10 is entitled "The Case of Tosh's Missing Baby".

brilliant

Allira Thu 12-Dec-24 18:32:05

Yes.
Jimmy Perez's daughter, Cassie, featured in the stories and at least we know what happened to her.

John Barnaby's irritating daughter featured a lot but Neil Barnaby's daughter disappeared too.

Morse didn't have children.

That was answering Aveline 🙂

Surely the baby won’t be a baby by now?

Maybe at nursery?

Tosh doesn’t seem very bothered either way.

I thought most of the plot was pretty rubbishy.

Did anyone else notice that the old chap Angus, the one in the camper van, used to be in ‘Wycliffe’ many moons ago? He was the police sergeant/constable back then.

Obviously retired to Shetland after a hectic tv police career.

I think the most irritating thing about Tom Barnaby’s daughter was her name.

Cully.

🤷‍♀️

Jimmy Yuill (Angus) was the year below me at college. He's aged a bit. It's just possible that I might have too!

She's gone to boarding school along with the Barnaby child.

Well spotted!

Does this Shetland baby have a name?
Carrie? Cressie? Callie? Carly?

I do hope she's found.

I did enjoy the series, and I guessed the killer before the solution was shown - but it was not obvious early on.
There are always a lot of side stories that leads the detectives down wrong paths. The answer/motive is generally to do with love, jealousy, fear. Sometimes revenge or money. We are always too taken in with the wrong turns along the way.

I don't know if Tosh's relationship will survive if her partner cannot accept that she has to ask inconvenient questions of their friends when necessary. She has to do her job, and she and Ruth have each other to talk to.
Perez had similar difficulties when he had to question his brother - who was a slippery character!

His brother? Or do you mean Cassie's birth father?

Calendargirl Fri 13-Dec-24 10:30:08

Yes, I think they are talking about Duncan, Cassie’s birth dad.

He was rather naughty, but quite nice.

Does Tosh have a baby? Did I imagine a high chair in her flat? Or do I need to go to Specsavers?

well she certainly did in other series and her partner looked after it... don't know how old it is supposed to be now but one would image there would be some sign of a child..

Bags me the royalties to any program on Tosh’s baby, as I brought it up first.

I simply cannot watch Shetland anymore with those two drippy women pretending to be detectives! Bring back Perez please. 🤔

Aveline Fri 13-Dec-24 17:10:53

Not for me! He can mope off somewhere else.

I finally binge watched this latest series. I feel it was an improvement on the last one (not difficult) but the story/stories dragged by a lot of the time to the extent I fast forwarded several times.
What I liked - the Procurator Fiscal was actually seen to be working this time, Sandy wasn’t as useless as usual, Ruth’s character is growing on me.
My biggest dislike is still the character of Tosh, I really don’t think the actress can act, wide eyes and grimacing isn’t acting imo. And being truly petty, her fringe really annoyed me, I kept hoping she’d appear having had a haircut.
And yes, I agree about not seeing her child, very odd.

Yes but you didn’t spot Tosh was really pregnant in this last series. I had a few bets on with friends as the series advanced, then near the end the traditional box or ledger carrying and the final give away the coat over the arm. Well done Tosh six months pregnant with your second baby but I would still like to see the little girl you had in the series ages ok, the one Donnie looked after, that’s a mystery where is she 🤷‍♀️

JamesandJon33 Sun 22-Dec-24 05:56:02

Didn’t I?

I'm currently reading the books but haven't seen the tv series. I am familiar with Douglas Henshaw and I think he was an excellent choice for the lead character.
After reading the remarks on here, I'll stick to the books.

Aveline Sun 22-Dec-24 06:02:30

Why not just check the new TV series?

The tv ones now are not the books written by Ann Cleeves, just based on her ideas.

Hence some of the plots are rather weak.

New series starting on Wednesday 5th November at 9pm on BBC 1.

Also new book with Perez in out now after his move to Orkney.
