The new series of Shetland starts on November 6th at 21.00 on BBC1 and iPlayer. Ian Hart and Vincent Regan, both well kent faces are in it, as well as the returning Ashley Jensen (Ruth), Alison O’Donnell (Tosh), Steven Robertson (Sandy) and Lewis Howden (Billy).
I was not a fan of the previous series so am hoping for both an improved storyline and acting this time.

I watch Shetland to see my favourite places. It's great that a lot of the filming is on the islands.

I got used to it but just had to regard it as a totally different programme.

I miss Douglas Henshall, but obviously am in the minority as I enjoyed Ashley Jensen in the last series. I love tosh and am glad they kept a lot of the original cast. I will look forward to the new series.

Shetland without Douglas Henshall and Mark Bonnar wasn't worth watching, we only managed the first episode of the last series - Ashley Jensen is not a good enough actress for such a big role.

I didn’t enjoy the last series- did anyone?

My husband was in Shetland last week on business and visited some of the places from the series. He sent us some beautiful pictures from St Ninians beach. Loved the books. I hope some of Anne Cleaves other characters will be made into a tv show as well still watch Vera.

Dougie Henshall ‘was’ Shetland. He was broody, introspective sexy. If he was DI investigating my Aunt Lettuce’s murder, I’d feel very safe. Alison O’Donnell is wooden, unlikely ( bad casting) over reactive, I wouldn’t feel at all safe with her in charge.
I watch it and pretend it’s NOT Shetland, but another second rate series.

I feel like this too, though the thought of Vincent Reagan is very appealing.

I stopped watching when Perez left. Something i never understand is how writers take a perfectly good and popular series and then try to inject 'spice' into it. And ruin it for loyal watchers. It happens in almost every good series...if it aint broke, why fix it? Fine if Henshall wanted to leave but just replace him with someone equally decent.

Sarnia

I see Agatha Raisin whenever Ashley Jensen appears. Henshall is a huge loss to Shetland and I don't look forward to it with as much pleasurable anticipation as I did when Jimmy Perez was in charge.

I've read the Agatha Raisin books but never watched the series.

Agatha Raisin to me was more a mix of Hyacinth Bouquet and Miss Marple, not Ashley Jensen.
Perhaps I should try to find the series wherever it's lurking now.

Obviously I'm in a minority but I like Ashley Jensen and also the actress playing Tosh. I have to say that the scenery is such that I definitely don't ever want to go to Shetland but I suppose it's a nice change from gritty city based cop shows

I gave up after a couple of episodes of the last series.

I'm surprised the writers don't know that viewers are not interested in the all the finer details of a newcomer's background and problems right at the offset They have to get invested in a character before they care.

Not the same without Perez - they should have scrapped it and let us gently mourn its passing.

Hear, hear, Sarnia, bring back Douglas Henshall! Shetland has been turned into a drippy feminist soup with Ashley whatshername & the other whining drip. I simply cannot watch Shetland anymore such a shame many for of us fans & poor Douglas Henshall. 😒

Boz

It's just about watchable on a winter's evening, but not the same with out Henshall; a first-class actor who elevated the series.

Hear, hear Boz, Douglas Henshall was just perfect as the canny, enigmatic Shetland detective.
I adored every episode but I cannot stand his sub-standard replacement, Ashley whateverhernameis!
Herself & Tosh are soo irritating & full on neurotic when interacting & twittering on together!
I will no longer watch this watered-down feminist, drippy load of ca,ca caa! I really hope they bring back Douglas Henshall & maybe get rid of the evermore simmpering, whiny Tosh, who tries be so right- on its excruciating to watch! 🙄

I listened to all the books on Audible, narrated by the fantastic Kenny Blyth, and as a result couldn’t watch the TV production.

Very well put, just how I feel too.
Ashley Jenson is totally wrong for the part too, which really matters as the lead actor.

I loved the books so much, I cannot watch the TV series.

I have all of the books.

Janiepops Mon 28-Oct-24 18:01:45

Exactly! I suspect financial gain is involved….

grannydarkhair Mon 28-Oct-24 17:28:18

Boz I agree, it would have been better if the series had ended with Jimmy’s departure. Duncan (Mark Bonnar) was another major loss. I wonder if he might appear again? Mind you, without Cassie and/or Jimmy, I don’t suppose there’d be much point in him returning.
Janiepops I’ve previously commented that if I was Ann Cleves, I’d be mightily cheesed off by it still being called Shetland.

Boz Mon 28-Oct-24 17:15:22

They should have ended the series when he left like they are ending Vera with BB's retirement from her pivotal role in the series. I think it was the love of the scenery by viewers which the makers hoped would push this series forward.

Septimia Mon 28-Oct-24 17:03:49

It's not the same as the original, but I watch it for the scenery and to see if I recognise anywhere!

No, it's not the same without Dougie.

BigBertha1 Mon 28-Oct-24 16:19:48

He did indeed Boz I shall watch it and hope its better than last time and Ashley Jensen cheers up.
