For lovers of Thomas Hardy this film is well worth a watch. It stars Christopher Eccleston and Kate Winslet and was on at 9 pm tonight BBC4.

I started watching it when I was channel hopping last night. Had forgotten how good it was but decided not to watch all of it because I find it so sad. I can rewatch adaptations of Tess and cry my eyes out but the sadness in Jude overwhelms me. I did watch the documentary about Hardy that was on afterwards. In my youth I lived near to where he and Emma met. I love his books. Strange how both he and Dickens wrote such great parts for women in their books but treated the women in their own lives so badly.

I love Thomas Hardy’s novels but this is the one that really depressed me, I think it was the character Little Father Time. However Christopher Eccleston and Kate Winslet are very good actors so I will give it a try this weekend after I have watched the Tess Of The d’Urbervilles mini series. I will watch the Hardy documentary as well. I wonder if BBC4 will screen any more Hardy films, I remember The Mayor Of Casterbridge series years ago with Alan Bates and there is also a series or a film of The Woodlanders.

I’m not so keen on Hardy’s novels, but he wrote truly wonderful poetry..

Is that the Gemma Arterton one? I loved that. I couldn’t work out why they chose Eddie Redmayne to play Angel at the time, not realising what a great actor he is. Of course, both he and Gemma were unknown at the time. It is the most beautiful adaptation. On the subject of Eddie I was watching him on the Graham Norton show and it dawned on me that when they eventually make the film of Rory Stewart’s book he would be perfect for the part.

I haven’t watched all of it yet but I have read the book and remember how hard it was to read but I love Thomas Hardy.

“Done because we are too many” - breaks my heart to remember

Same here. It actually gives me a pain inside if that makes sense. Same with the ending of Tess and the chapter about poor Sorrow sad

Thanks Greenfinch.

I love Thomas Hardy's work but didn't realise this novel had been made into a movie.

I will watch it this evening...I love a period drama smile

I saw these posts yesterday and so I watched Jude on catch up. All good until we got to the scene where she was giving birth. There she was legs wide open with a massive amount of blood, - both my husband and I grimaced and said that was too much. Did we really need to see that?! we both thought it was unecessary

Adore his poetry and he thought of himself first and foremost as a poet.
He wrote novels purely out of need.
