I regularly listen to this podcast in which Gyles Brandreth interviews interesting people about their memories, always beginning with "What is your very first memory?" I find it fascinating and their have been some interesting interviewees.
But every other podcast is about his diaries from childhood, which are an insight into him as a person and into prep and public schools during the 50s, 60s and onwards.
One aspect is the casual acceptance of teacher on male pupil sexual interference - we are not talking rape here, but what he refers to as "touching". This was a regular occurrence for Gyles with his music teacher and he seems to have been brain-washed into thinking it was an expression of love. He does not see himself as having been damaged by this and just takes it as par for the course. The teachers was eventually dismissed as he was sussed, but Gyles lied when asked about him and defended him.
How sad that he felt the need for this "love" and did not see this as outside the norm.
What colour car do you have or did you used to drive?
