Not another celebrity accused of sexual misconduct ! This time it's Gregg Wallace! Kirsty Wark accused him from 2011.

Even more accusations have come to light now. Some that were reported but no further actions decided on.

It wasn't really an apology though was it? just saying people should not have taken offence.

Yes, the "I'm-sorry-if-you-were-offended" apology. hmm

It's the kind of 'apology' used by those who attempt to portray themselves as the victim and garner support. Various comments I've seen on other social media would suggest that it has worked to some extent for Wallace.

Of course at the moment the allegations against him are just that - allegations.

But how many thousands of women have had to put up with oafish behaviour by men for fear of either some sort of reprisal, maybe not being believed, or - if believed - being mocked for taking 'laddish' behaviour too seriously. Because it was just banter, a bit of fun.

Depressing isn't it?

We won’t be seeing him after this series anyway. Or on any other TV programme I suspect. He really heaped coal on the fire by posting about “middle class women of a certain age” before belatedly apologising. An amazing lack of self reflection and awareness, plus an ill conceived entitlement.

So in order to shift the blame for his oafish behaviour, he's created yet another division in our society.

On FB these middle-class women of a certain age are already being smeared for "crawling out of the woodwork".

... as if there are not enough segregations already.

I’m glad Master Chef is going ahead tonight. The programme is not about one man, and these professional chefs have done well to get to the final. I’m glad they’ve been prioritised. I don’t see why Wallace should ruin it for them. They must be bursting to let their families know how they’ve done.

I agree.

His remarks were misogynistic, sexist and harassment but it would be a pity for his unacceptable behaviour to ruin the show for others taking part.

I wonder what his wife is thinking.

Which one? 1,2,3 or 4?

How the heck did he manage to get 4 wives? I find it hard to understand that anyone would give his ugly mug a second glance, let alone give him their bodies! Yuk, yuk, yuk!!

I honestly don’t think that looks come into this situation, there are many plain or ugly men who are happily married if you look around.
I think he’s invoking the ‘Karen concept’ here isn’t he? That won’t help his case.

MissAdventure Sun 01-Dec-24 20:04:35

I think he may have a nasty, but well deserved surprise, if he thinks working class women are more accepting of his attitude.

Iam64 Sun 01-Dec-24 18:57:35

He’s clearly implying working class women wouldn’t object to being sexually harassed, whereas up themselves middle class women of a certain age have no sense of proportion or humour.
He’s incapable of reading the room.

So he now says ‘it’s a handful of middle class women of a certain age’
He can’t keep his gob shut can he? talk about open it and put your foot in it eh

Yep his comments have just made him look even worse, if that is possible, his legal advisor should tell him to put a sock in it.

Mollygo Sun 01-Dec-24 17:25:56

Evidently it’s not just him. There are other complaints flooding in about others according to some reports.

Allira Sun 01-Dec-24 17:25:07

some women would take the attitude ‘why should I?’ And really - why should they?
Yes, indeed. That would be turning themselves into victims.

I used to watch him on Inside the Factory. Nestle asked for him never to return after he filmed an episode there because he was making remarks to the female staff that working in a chocolate factory was the reason they were fat. He clearly has all the subtlety of a stampeding bull.

And the looks to go with it.

Why did they carry on working with him if he was so vile. They could have just walked away instead they smiled away while cooking on celebrity masterchef.
If anyone made patronising sexist or crude remarks to me they would regret it straight away.

I assume it is very hard when contracted to do a programme like master chef which is so highly thought of to just walk away, some women would take the attitude ‘why should I?’ And really - why should they? Am sure complaints were made by the women to Wallace at the time. But again it is still hard for women to have complaints taken seriously until other women start the ball rolling, so this is why historic cases only come to light once one woman has been brave enough to come forward.

Babs03 Sun 01-Dec-24 16:05:35

Another social dinosaur who fails miserably to read the room with regard to women.
Fact is we hated it many moons ago when bosses thought nothing of slapping a young female employees backside or making offensive sexist remarks to howls of laughter from other men, but we felt powerless to do anything about it. Thank goodness women today - and men - are making a stand against this.

I often wonder when people suggest that the complainants in these type of cases ie harassment, inappropriate 'banter' etc., are being 'woke' or have no sense of humour if they would think it so harmless if it was their daughter or wife who was on the receiving end. I suspect not

Other choice and tired remarks that mysoginists use when you fail to respond with gushing glee to their "banter" are: "wot? You a lesbian?" and "you frigid or somefink?"
They see themselves as indulging in carefree bonhomie. Women, of course, are defective due to hormones........give me strength.

Oh yes - I've heard both of those.

"Are you a lesbian?" asked a 20-something idiot who'd tried to chat-me up - on an escalator of all places at Piccadilly Circus underground station.

I was about 13 at the time and not totally convinced I knew much about lesbianism. I felt brave because there were a lot of people around, so I just said, "No, I'm not, I just think you are very ugly.

... can't remember how he responded though - he said something and then just disappeared.

I told my mum and she explained along the lines of there being men who were so full of themselves they were too stupid to realise that they were neither entertaining nor attractive to women.

And they will, of course, always blame the women who either rejected them or found them offensive.

... it's all the fault of "middle-class women of a certain age"... apparently.

As you say - give me strength.

Possibly because there have been long term cases of rape or indecent assault coming to light, and women thought they only had a right to complain when it came to that?
It's taken quite a long time for co-ercive abuse (which this is) to be taken really seriously.

The other practical reason is that the programmes were not made "in house" at the BBC or Channel 5, but by production companies, so one step removed as in who to complain to.

"On Thursday, MasterChef's production company Banijay UK said Wallace would step away from presenting the show while allegations of historical misconduct were investigated. The 60-year-old is "committed to fully co-operating throughout the process", Banijay added."

Everdene Sun 01-Dec-24 15:17:38

Redhead56 I assume one reason why the celebrities decided to carry on and not walk away was because they were under contract and were being paid a reasonable sum to appear on the show.

MissAdventure Sun 01-Dec-24 14:45:24

Maybe vecause everyone else seemed to not make a fuss?
