I just love this Christmas scene that precedes the BBC News and probably other programmes as well.

An old fashioned sitting room ready for Christmas, with a good fire burning, paper chains hanging from the picture rails, comfy seating and lamps lit.

Makes me think of years gone by and nostalgic for it all, although our home didn’t look quite as cosy as that idyllic scene.

Oh yes, me too!

I don't know if I've seen the W&G sitting room, but my favourite book for babies and toddlers is Peepo!, which is full of scenes from wartime. My mum was a small child in the war, so it is far from my own experience never mind that of my children, but there is something comforting about the illustrations - maybe because they are seen through they eyes of a baby in his cot, not the adults.

It looks like my childhood in the 1950s, except ours wasn't quite as upmarket as that one! What a Health & Safety nightmare our Christmas home was - real candles on the tree, paper garlands hanging everywhere (with a coal fire burning merrily), half a dozen electrical things somehow running off the one & only socket in the room. It makes me laugh to think of what scaredy-cats we've become, frightened of every last trailing bit of tinsel in case the baby licks it.

No it won’t.

Who is doing the voice for Wallace?

Ben Whitehead is voicing Wallace.

Won't be the same without Peter Sallis though

I'm OK with mugs but they are just too white.
It looks (to me) as though someone has superimposed them.

I can't take my eyes off them grin

I suppose a cup and saucer would have looked better.

It's such a lovely comforting scene somehow.

Too too white, too clunky, too contrasty, too obvious.

Why are they wrong?

NotSpaghetti Sat 07-Dec-24 18:53:13

I like it too... but the big black and white (oh...too, too white) mugs annoy me a lot... and they are even worse for having the enormous and ugly W and G letters on them!

I can't look at anything else. They are totally totally WRONG.
Grrrr!

It’s lovely isn’t it. I love Wallace and Grommet, and Shaun the sheep. Can’t wait to see the new one on Christmas Day.

I'm looking forward to the new Wallace and Gromit film on Christmas day.
