On its fortieth anniversary The Box of Delights is being shown on BBC4. Also on catchup. I wish I had the willpower to just watch one episode a week and watch the final episode on Christmas Eve.

This was an absolute favourite of my now 44 year old son, we even bought the VHS video!

My children watched this entranced - “I had it under my hand” is still quoted when they put something down then cannot find it.

I remember listening to this long, long ago on the radio’s Children’s Hour. It was magical, they re-issued it several times over the years and it always entranced me. It was superbly acted, the rats and the clergymen frighteningly sinister The music that introduced it was Victor Healy Hutchinson’s arrangement of Vaughan Williams’ Ceremony of Carols and it is the piece of music that still gives me that fizzy excited feeling that Christmas gave one as a child.

When and where is the TV version showing please.

When my house is in a terrible mess ( which is most of the time) I always exclaim ‘but where are the servants’….
