I never watched this when it was aired - only ever saw bits of it on Gogglebox.
However, I finally gave in to all the hype and have watched the box set on iplayer.
Apart from Pam & Mick, I don't really find any of the other characters either particularly likeable, or particularly interesting. I don't hate it but I can think of a lot more programmes I'd rather watch.
Are there any diehard fans on here? I'm sure I must be in the minority given all the fuss about the Christmas programme.
I've now become OBSESSED with it. I was overcome with glee when Nessa did the T & C's on Strictly. (Even though I still find the character unlikeable - but I do "get" her.)
I'll probably now make omelettes for Christmas lunch and suggest a fishing trip on Boxing Day. I shall make sure my towels are soft so that my guests don't feel that they're drying themselves on Ryvita. I shall start calling my youngest (now 45) "xxx the baby" and start a family discussion on our favourite motorway services.
DH and I absolutely love Gavin & Stacey, all the characters are such - characters. It's very observant of life, love and loyalty and we will be ensconced on the sofa at 9 pm on Christmas Day with large mugs of mulled wine and a couple of hot sausage rolls, ready to laugh or cry or both.
High Hopes, also a Welsh BBC production, was better, and more akin to Gavin and Stacey I think LucyAnna2. I doubt it’s available easily now though, as it’s over 20 years old. Ruth Jones also wrote and starred in a series called Stella on Sky, which I enjoyed.
Love Gavin and Stacey! Someone (a friend in Wales) told me there was a similar programme called The Tuckers. Watched a couple of episodes, but it’s not to my taste - veers more toward ‘Mrs Browns Boys’ sort of ‘humour’. www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/p07ycg4l
As a family we love it, and 9pm will be the highlight of the day. Home from all the necessary socialising, just the 4 of us with the port, Stilton and Gavin and Stacey. That’s well lush.
I still can’t get over Nessa’s comments about Mohamed al Fayed in series 1. It was filmed in 2007 so he was still alive. Why didn’t he go after the BBC? Is it because he knew they already had a lot on him and was advised to let it go? What about his victims who might have been fans of G&S and watched the episode. Their jaws must have dropped!
These days a ‘hint’ like that would be all over the media the following day.
I love it and never tire of the regular re-runs. The first Christmas special was underwhelming though, with only the core cast, and I’m not expecting the new one to be any better - the ship had sailed and the chemistry has gone, it’s a shame to try and force it. The last one should have wound things up and not been left on a question.
I'm on my own Christmas Day but got it all planned and definitely the Gavin & Stacey finale. It's such typical British humour with all the characters bringing something to the story. It's gentle too, no violence, no nastiness.
Love it. I live 15 miles away from Barry Island where it was filmed. I can’t wait for the finale, and I’ll tell you for why. I want to know what happened on the fishing trip and of course if Smithy says yes. I hopes he do.
