I never watched this when it was aired - only ever saw bits of it on Gogglebox.

However, I finally gave in to all the hype and have watched the box set on iplayer.

Apart from Pam & Mick, I don't really find any of the other characters either particularly likeable, or particularly interesting. I don't hate it but I can think of a lot more programmes I'd rather watch.

Are there any diehard fans on here? I'm sure I must be in the minority given all the fuss about the Christmas programme.

Alison Steadman was excellent in The Singing Detective as were all the cast.

I'm watching Black Doves on netflix and Sarah Lancashire is such a good actress. I think she got something, not sure what.

Alison Steadman is a really good actor but I agree that Pam as a character is grating.

Could you recommend something she's been in that might change my mind? I've seen her in Abigail's Party (young Pamela?) Pride and Prejudice (old fashioned Pamela?) and G&S as Pamela and they all seem the same to me, loud, not very bright woman who thinks a lot of herself just wearing different clothes. I'd love to see her in something where she is totally different and I could see her as a really good actor.

She was in the Mike Leigh film 'Life is Sweet' and played a truly unpleasant woman

Thank you, when all my visitors are gone next week I will try to find that and see her in a different light.

She was wonderful in Fat Friends.

Nessa will be one of the voices reading the Shipping Forecast on New Years Day.

It was very good. 🥰
I’m one of those nerds who love the shipping forecast.
Good job I did, I’ve had to listen to enough.

Yes, we've just watched it too, Jaxjacky, it was enjoyable and quite emotional.

Ziggy62 Wed 01-Jan-25 20:48:38

Yes, I enjoyed it

Just watched Gavin and Stacey a fond farewell, interesting, funny and really lovely. The actors and crew seem to have had an absolute ball making the last episode, genuine friendship, respect and love.

... I think 'Nuts In May' is well worth watching (another Mike Leigh film), Alison Steadman is very funny in that.

She was in fact married to Mike Leigh for a while, if I remember correctly?

I was introduced to G&S quite recently. I love it now - the characters are brilliant - especially Nessa and Bryn. Nessa’s name-dropping reminded me of Colleen Rooney on I’m A Celebrity! 🤣Sheridan Smith was good as the chav sister. Surely Pam is meant to be annoying?🤔 I love their house - it’s actually in Wales, not Essex. I think it’s successful because all the characters are very relatable and very British, without having to be politically correct. 🙄

I liked Stella better, Ruth was amazing in that, it’s still on sky i think, the depth of characters and the writing was brilliant, similar street also set in Wales

My husband and I were watching it with my son who is in his early 20's. It is one of the few programmes which we can all laugh at and enjoy. It's a bit like The Royal Family where the observation of certain groups of people is just so spot on. We love it even though some bits of the plot were so predicable.

Allira Fri 27-Dec-24 16:20:45

never ever watched it
