Royal Variety Performance

Just flicked over to see what was on after the Antiques show, to find a woman shrieking at the top of her voice.
No idea who she was, but we turned it off pronto.

I feel sorry that the King has to sit through the Royal Variety Performance. I think he might have enjoyed the Victoria Wood extravaganza last night [Wednesday] on television which included lots of well known actors playing funny roles. Great fun. So sad that she is no longer with us.

For Mac, the sketch with people wearing letters was an excerpt from a show, but them most of the whole RVP was taken from shows, with occasional wildly irritating link sections with Carr & Holden. The comics were gruesome, SEB's mike seemed to have failed, and did Penn & Teller really come over for one little trick stretched out to last half an hour? As many have said, anyone thinking the Royal Family have an easy job should factor in having to attend that tripe!

I watched a short sketch when the actors all wore a letter like Y. U. T" It was a very clever script and funny.
I also watched OLIVER.
Fortunately at home we can dip in and out. His Majesty has to watch the lot.

I usually really enjoy the Royal Variety but this year it was awful. The screaming singer, not a clue who she was and Alan Carr & Amanda Holden were dreadful. Such a shame.

leeds22 Tue 17-Dec-24 16:40:06

Phew, thank goodness I didn't know it was on it. Sounds dreadful.

Peaches7 Tue 17-Dec-24 16:38:18

I loved the Royal variety, show, and thought it very entertaining

Mauduit24 Tue 17-Dec-24 16:08:32

I watched for ten minutes. Who on earth thought that plastic Amanda and Alan would be entertaining?. I felt sorry for the king having to sit through the drivel. Gone are the days when we would have performers come over from the us to entertain. These days it z listers from bgt and similar talentless shows

Dreadful hosts. Why is Amanda Holden on everything and then advertising some cheap hand wash during the ads. As for the shrieking woman.....

I’m not too bothered either way about Alan Carr but that dreadful Amanda Holden should be removed from all TV programmes. Both she and her voice make me sick. Not to mention her little girl demeanour. Ugh!

Remember during Covid? Amanda Holden's photograph was always popping up in the tabloids, fully made up and wearing a posh frock, while the rest of us were pretty much under house arrest and keeping six feet apart. She seemed to be going everywhere with her personal photographer!

I thought it was awful. Amanda Holden is an absolute show off. And Alan Carr keep on about being gay - we don’t care!!!! The woman shouting the national anthem was dreadful, couldn’t stand to watch her song later in the show.
I’m also surprised at Elton John getting involved with The Devil Wears Prada, I won’t be rushing to watch that. Weak, boring and amateur.
Oliver was great and Sophie Ellis Bexter too. She should have been the headline act. Apart from them the show was terrible

I’ve never been a fan of Amanda Holden, her cackling laugh makes my skin crawl. Alan Carrs not much better. We watched the royal variety show on Sunday as we’re on holiday with limited access to English language tv, and we had spent the day walking so needed a rest, but it was enough to remind us never to watch it again if those 2 are presenting, was there a clause in their contract which stated the had to get in on as many acts as possible.

Quizzer Tue 17-Dec-24 12:02:42

Watched it on catch-up. Fast forwarded through all the Alan Carr and Amanda Holden bits!

ginny Mon 16-Dec-24 10:36:29

Good and bad bits as usual. But I agree that woman screeching like a broken violin was fire. Great song ruined

Calendargirl Mon 16-Dec-24 09:41:21

But he’s no longer a ‘working’ royal!

grin

The Royal family missed a chance to punish Andrew following his latest revelations. He should have been made to sit through 2 hours of Alan Carr and Amanda Holden 😊

🤣🤣🤣

Bring back Bradley Walsh, the whole thing was rubbish including the hosts.

The RVP or the Royal Command Performance as it was known years ago was a must-see in our household when we were young.

The Queen, or QM, always arrived in ball gowns, tiaras, furs, the stars were queueing up to be on, it was a huge honour.

Sadly, as with so much, an absolute shadow of its former self.

The RF must draw lots as to who has to make an appearance each year.

I haven’t watched it for years, so it might be better than I imagine.

Sparklefizz Mon 16-Dec-24 08:43:53

Another one here who can't stand either Alan Carr or Amanda Holden.

Ziggy62 Mon 16-Dec-24 08:03:59

Loved Oliver, excellent

Oopsadaisy1 Mon 16-Dec-24 06:39:23

I’m another one who turns off when I see Alan Carr and Amanda Holden, so to see them both made me switch off straight away, I dipped in later and saw it was Elton John, so I turned it off again. I can’t remember when I last watched a Royal Variety Performance all the way through.

Lovetopaint037 Mon 16-Dec-24 02:12:13

Thought this year’s the best I had seen for a long time. I was amazed by Stephen Mulhern. He performed his illusions in such an entertaining way. I have only known him as a very talented presenter and had no idea about his “magic”. The production of Oliver shown was excellent. The Devil wore Prada was also good with catchy Elton John’s music. The Cirque de Soleil was fantastic. The comedians were funny but without resorting to referring to the Royal Box.There was the usual screaching women or as it seemed to us. Said to dh perhaps it is better if we were there. Actually enjoyed it overall.

I actually thought it was a teensy weensy bit better this year. At least there wasn’t the usual string of embarrassing, banal comments aimed at the royal box (yes, you, Bradley Walsh)

The acts from musicals were very good. I could be wrong but I think the screeching woman was also on Songs of Praise earlier today murdering O Holy Night.

You’re right. I went to look on iPlayer and she’s called Marissa Wallace.

It’s always been dire but has got worse. I used to feel sorry for the late Queen having to sit through it.
