Watching old films on BBC 2

I’m probably in a minority of one. I think it’s a really well made film, but I find George Bailey from It’s a Wonderful Life a bit selfish to even consider leaving his lovely family. I do get the message though.

Love all the old black and white movies, but in my opinion the very best just has to be It's a Wonderful Life. My most favourite film ever!

Had a lovely day today watching Easter Parade, Meet Me in St Louis and now Calamity Jane. All on BBC 2. Trying to just get on with my jobs but can’t help watching! Last night I watched Holiday Inn on Amazon (but I did have to pay 😖) Not as good as White Christmas but I’m fascinated with the stories and connections between the Irvin Berlin films. I think High Society is on after Christmas.

Talking Pictures is definitely a goodie. On Monday, there's Meet Me in St Louis, Move Over Darling and Calamity Jane on BBC2. Then White Christmas on Tuesday. How am I meant to clean up for visitors on the 26th with so much good stuff to watch?!

Definitely!

That's the channel I mentioned above welbeck.

Your comment wasn't visible to me when I wrote mine.

Anyway great minds think alike.

My husband is addicted to Talking Pictures TV. It shows old films and series non stop.

Thanks. I discovered this recently but then forgot which channel it was on. I try to watch The Bishops Wife at Christmas. Not sure if it’s been shown on any of the channels this year. I did record it last year but had to delete it as my Humax box was full.

Sorry but I love a good old black and white war film. The Cruel Sea, Reach for the Sky, Ice Cold in Alex (my dad’s favourite) and many others.

They couldn’t rely on ridiculously loud sound effects to create tension, just the talents of great actors like Jack Hawkins, John Mills and Donald Pleasance.

Oh I love all these. Does anyone know if A Christmas Carol is on? My favourite.

LadyGaGa Sat 21-Dec-24 15:39:06

Oooo yes. The African Queen and Brief Encounter. Love those.

Jane Eyre is on BBC4 this evening, though quite late. My absolute favourite book.

Well, I scanned the Christmas tv guide, hoping to see a good film on this afternoon as DH was out.

Couldn’t see a thing I fancied.

Why wasn’t ‘Now Voyager’ on today? angry

I love that film.

‘Don’t ask for the moon, Gerry. We have the stars’

(Might have got that wrong, but you get the gist)

I watched two of my favourite Powell and Pressburger films on BBC recently: “I know where I’m going” and “The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp”. Both had Roger Livesey in the lead role, with Wendy Hiller and Deborah Kerr respectively. Lovely. No bad language, brilliant acting. Pure nostalgia. Okay, they’re a little ‘clunky’ now but very refreshing.

Madeleine45, what a predicament you were in with the leaky toilet. Must be lovely to be back home again. Enjoy all the films and doing as you please!

I really enjoyed 'Fiddler on the Roof' and yesterday watched Bette Davis in 'Now Voyager'; fabulous.

At sometime over the christmas period I shall be sure to watch The Railway Children - but it must be the one with Jenny Agutter as Bobby and Bernard Cribbins as Perks. Then of course there must be a chance to see Brief Encounters with Celia Johnson and Trevor Howard, and Humphry Bogart with Katherine Hepburn in The African Queen. My lovely husband and I used to always enjoy them and then with my son we would watch Father Christmas and The Snowman etc etc. I am a widow now and live alone. Have only got back into my flat yesterday , after spending 10 weeks away as there was a leak of sewage water behind the toilet, and the total bathroom has had to be removed, sanitised and redone. So the upheaval meant that I didnt even have my address book or anything, as I was left at 2pm without any toilet or water and nowhere to go, . I am so grateful to have been able to come home yesterday. The new bathroom looks lovely and I can use water and the kitchen. Everywhere else is a total tip . No cards sent, or christmas food , and my daughter in law and grandson have covid so cant visit. So I shall think of my lovely husband, sit comfortably in my chair, watch as many of my favourites as I can manage, and then plan to drive up my wonderful Swaledale on christmas day, with a little picnic of nice things and some decent coffee and my binoculars, and be in the place that means the most to me in the world. Hopefully next year will be an improvement on this . Of course I shant have the winter fuel money to help out at all!!!! Well I plan to live for a very very long time, and annoy whichever government is in power. Well must go and look up in the radio times and mark up when my favourites are on the tv., . Hah ! One great thing about being on my own, I can eat when I want and ignore the phone or whatever and once the Railway Children starts I shall settle down and watch the whole thing in peace and quiet. Then of course will have as much J S Bach on the radio as I can listen to, and radio 3 and 4 and plays on the radio that I can listen to whilst attempting to do a bit of clearing up. Hope you all enjoy your films , Oh and I meant to say ABSOLUTELY NO WAR FILMS WHATSOEVER11111 Peace on Earth and Goodwill to All!!!

Oh I agree Granfromafar. I’m watching it too. Watched Now Voyager yesterday and one this morning where Cary Grant is an angel and David Niven a Bishop. I watch White Christmas every year and hope that Hello Dolly pops up. Love an old film. My fave was always Meet Me in St Lois, but I’ve seen it so many times I’m a bit fed up with it 😂

Am currently watching Funny Girl, starring Barbra Streisand and Omar Sharif. Great singing and acting, even if a little schmaltzy! Earlier this week I watched Fiddler on the Roof and Gentlemen Prefer Blondes. Nothing like a bit of a nostalgia on a gloomy winter afternoon!
