I'm terrified of having my blood pressure taken. I've been called in and am having panic attacks at the thought. I've tried all the tricks to overcome it but nothing works and up it zooms. Taking it myself has the same effect. I must watch that programme.

I was the same. I used to be terrified of spiders, but I didn't want to pass that fear onto my children. We went to an open day at our local vets one year and they had a huge python and a tarantula there. My daughter and I both held the python and I told her that if she held the tarantula, I would too. It took every ounce of courage I had to do it - but I did. I have to confess though that if I see a spider in the house now, I also dispatch them!

Glad I'm not the only spider dispatcher. grin

I've been scared of spiders so my daughter arranged for a visit from a young man who came with a variety of creatures. He talked about them and allowed us to hold them one at a time.
To my surprise I was able to hold a tarantula and since then my fear of spiders in general has reduced considerably. Phew!

My only real phobia is lightning. I'm not sure how I would face that, a bit at a time grin

I think I could more easily put a tarantula on my hand, than be pottering about indoors and get taken unawares by an ugly great house spider.

Bleueurgghh!!!!

Absolutely - it's definitely worse when they're invading your home!

I am an arachnaphobe and getting worse. I can't even type the sp word. The trouble is, in order to tackle my phobia, I would have to picture them or think about them.... and I can't bear to do that.

I was like you. Terrified of them until I took 4 of my grandchildren to a Creepy Crawly Rainforest Roadshow. The very name should have given me an idea of the treats in store. Everything was fine to start with when the cockroaches, millipedes and stick insects were brought round but then came the arachnids. One GD who was around 4 wanted to hold one. Her hands were very small and I was demonstrating how to place one palm over the other like wings when the handler deposited this huge red kneed tarantula on my hands. I stood like a statue praying this thing would not move. I was mightily relieved when the lady took it but just that few moments changed my feelings towards spiders. I am not terrified of them anymore. If I come across them in the house I am afraid to say I squash them (howls of protest) because I don't like the thought of them running around but I no longer scream of the sight of them. I can see how exposure to your fear is a good way of tackling it.

I will give this a go. There was something on this subject many years ago where people had the strangest phobias, like a fear of buttons, sitting down and turning right when driving. It may seem amusing to some but it was making their lives a misery.

Exactly Septimia.

I have the same problem with snakes Sparklefizz, including the word. I have sometimes coped with coming across them but there's no way I would want to deal with trying to cure my phobia. The very thought makes me want to move rapidly in the opposite direction!

Small steps. That's the way to do it. Forcing yourself to face your fears is the only way to overcome them, even if it's just one tiny little step at a time.

Personally. I. Have a huge fear of trying anything new I think because of huge pressure when young to succeed Don't know what they could do about that I kind of expect to fail

TakeThat7 Sat 28-Dec-24 20:02:24

Hopefully yes

That's ok. if it's do able for some the fears are deep rooted

Isn't that what it's all about though? Helping those who have genuine, deep-rooted phobias?

TakeThat7 Sat 28-Dec-24 20:01:16

Probably have a look at the programme though

Just seen a TV advert for a new series, where people face up to their phobias.

It sounds interesting, but I can't remember what day its on!
