Anyone keen or just watched the first episode tonight?

I really fancy this:

“ Pick of the week

It’s extremely rare, but has happened; babies have been swapped at birth in busy hospitals, although procedures introduced in the 1980s make such an event theoretically impossible in today’s NHS. That small detail aside, Grace Ofori-Attah (a former NHS doctor, who also wrote ITV’s Malpractice) has adapted JP Delaney’s 2020 psychological thriller on the subject into a gripping four-part series. James Norton and Niamh Algar are Pete and Maddie, who find out that their toddler Theo was swapped at birth with another boy, David. With David’s parents Miles and Lucy (James McArdle and Jessica Brown Findlay) they face a dilemma: do the couples – who have very different parenting styles – keep the sons they have raised, or reclaim their biological child? At first the adults are indeed “playing nice” as they try to navigate a way out of this nightmare, but a goodies versus baddies vibe soon emerges – and by the end of tomorrow’s second episode, we see that all is not as it appears with any of them.”

James Norton was completely wasted in this and I found the whole thing trite and ridiculous. Wanted to find out what happened though so watched all 4 episodes. Don’t know what that says about me.

I don’t know what it says about me either. 😂

It shows that it was a good script with good acting.

This actually happened in the seventies.
Listen to BBC 4 on catch-up 'The Gift'.
Discovered when a relative was given an ancestry kit as a Christmas present. The episode is called 'Switched'.

I remember that one. Very sad. The family were lovely, weren’t they?

The little boy playing Theo does well to remember all he has to say. He can’t be very old.

Not a spoiler I hope, but in the book, David was not so advanced as he appears on screen, seemed to have more health issues.

It’s all done with filming and editing.
The scenes where Theo is talking will be filmed as a stand alone scene, not following on from anything that has happened before.

Brilliant drama, watched the first 2 episodes and may watch the others before they are televised. It makes a change from the usual Police/crime drama. Have also just binge watched SAS Rogue Heroes and loved that too.

Love it! Excellent drama. Could binge it but tv is so bad I'm not..Need more like this..I dont watch anyreality tv, except Strictly and MC, or soaps or game shows. This is my type of programme.

Auntieflo - me too, an implausible plot with cliched characters.

I remember when I gave birth in 1983 and they wanted to wheel her off to the nursery for the night I refused because of fears like that. I did not trust anyone with her and she never left my side.

1973 and they whisked my first baby away for the night so I could get a 'good night's sleep', refused me a cup of tea in case I was sick and were generally very bossy.
Of course I didn't sleep, I spent the night thinking there was something wrong with her then hoping I got the right baby back.
No need to worry, she was fine and she's her father's daughter all right!

Far fetched - definitely
Slow in parts but, on the whole, I did enjoy it

I can't say I'm enjoying it but I'm glued to the screen. I too like James Norton and the children are sweet. They'll have stories to tell when they're older!

I like James Norton as an actor, but only lasted 20 minutes of episode one.

I just couldn’t take to the adult characters, Theo was delightful.

The Guardian review is damning - I tend to agree! I thought it was a bit trite with the goodies and baddies so blatant and unsubtle.

The plot was daft, but the characters were interesting, and the central dilemma of whether a couple would want to (or should) keep a child they had bonded with and loved from birth, or the ‘natural’ child was interesting too, and the differences between the children (ie that one had developmental delays and the other possessed inherited traits) complicated things further. There was only one ‘baddie’, and all the ‘goodies’ were flawed in different ways, so I didn’t really see a lack of subtlety there.

I don’t think drama always has to be exactly like real life to be worth watching. Real life is often rather pedestrian, and we watch drama for entertainment and excitement. Getting the balance between credibility and enjoyment is tricky, but I thought that this was done quite well.

The children were beautiful.

I’ve only watched episode 1 but could guess where it was going. Found it quite disturbing.

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Mon 06-Jan-25 21:26:19

I never seem to watch much tv. I’m more of a reader but just lately, I’m hooked on Traitors - never seen it before and inadvertently started right at the beginning yesterday by accident! So I’ve loads of episodes to watch.

That means, this series will start soonish for me. I’m putting it on the back burner for now.

However, I thought I’d share the tv review on it that was in this morning’s Telegraph for anyone of you who might be interested:

“ ITV’s child-swap thriller is as implausible as it is addictive

Anita Singh

Imagine this: you are happily bringing up your three-year-old son when the hospital where he was born summons you to a meeting. There was a terrible mix-up, they say, and two babies were switched at birth. You were accidentally sent home with the wrong one, and another set of parents has raised your biological child.

What would you do? This is the premise of Playing Nice (ITV1), starring James Norton as Pete, the doting father who receives the bombshell news. He and his partner, Maddie (Niamh Algar), face a choice. Do they carry on as before? Do they form a relationship with the other little boy and his parents? Or do they go much further and swap the children back?

The series is based on a novel by JP Delaney, but mothers taking home the wrong baby – while vanishingly rare – has happened in real life. A case emerged recently of two women from the West Midlands who discovered in their 50s that they had been switched as babies – the NHS has admitted liability. It throws up all kinds of knotty dilemmas and opportunities for heartbreak. But this is an ITV thriller, so we’re in unserious territory. Frequently you’ll wonder why the characters aren’t more traumatised by the situation.

It’s more-ish, though, one of those bingeably implausible dramas that you will thoroughly enjoy if you surrender to it rather than yelling: “But that would never happen!” “Of course the courts/police/social workers/lawyers wouldn’t do that!” “This is nuts, why aren’t these people ringing 999?”

If Pete is the lovely dad at the centre of the story – and so placid that at times you’ll be willing him to start punching people’s lights out – Miles is the super-villain. Actor James McArdle makes a very good bad guy as the father of the other little boy, barging his way into Pete and Maddie’s lives.

He reveals himself from the outset to be a smug bully and a controlling husband to Lucy (Downton Abbey’s Jessica Brown Findlay). Initially, both couples say they would like to keep the children they have raised, but for the two families to be friends. Except there are three more episodes to go, so we know that’s not going to work out. Maddie seems to feel an instant bond with her biological son, while Pete does not.

There are passing references to Maddie’s postnatal depression and the stress of spending days in the neonatal intensive care unit with a premature baby. But these are secondary to the twists – are all of these parents what they seem? – and the anticipation of what dastardly Miles will do next.”

I gave up before the first episode finished. Just found it too creepy and unsettling. Such a shame as i like James Norton. Dh didnt like it either.

granfromafar Mon 06-Jan-25 20:09:20

Watched the first 2 episodes last night, as it clashes with Silent Witness tonight. Enjoyed it a lot, particularly James Norton, and looking forward to seeing the last 2 episodes.

Just finished it...I enjoyed it.

MissAdventure Mon 06-Jan-25 19:38:10

I was gripped from the first few minutes I watched.

It's absolutely great.
