A new rebooted Bergerac is due to be shown on U. I have been watching the old ones! My goodness they were so good! Even now, years later. Just had a peek at the new version. It doesn't look anywhere near as good IMO but will certainly give it a go. You can not beat John Nettles!!!!! Remember Phillipa Vale? Brilliant pairing. I find it hard to watch Mary in Emmerdale. Reminds me of all the years that have passed. she played Susan.

I stayed awake for it and ok so far I think but he does need to speak up.

I thought the new version was very dull and downbeat.
John Nettles is a very difficult act to follow, witness Neil Dudgeon as Barnaby.

Having got used to watching John Nettles in Midsomer Murders it's lovely to see him so young and handsome in old episodes of Bergerac. I've not aged at all in the interim of course. smile

We’ll be watching later

We loved the original, and visited the Bergerac attraction when we were in Jersey in the 90s. Admired the car, had our photos taken beside a life size cardboard cut out of John Nettles.
However I can't access subtitles on the new version, so that makes it difficult for me....

Will watch the new Bergerac hope it’s as good as the old one.

I have not watched the new Bergerac yet. I am enjoying the old ones at the moment. About to start series 10 tomorrow, the last one. I just know I am going to be bereft! ha ha. Just love John Nettles!!

I was never into the original Bergerac with John Nettles, but have started watching the new version and am loving it.

After all the hype, I'm surprised it's on U.
Not sure if I watched many in the past? I just know he was a Policeman in a sports car no idea of the back story.

U does have a few hidden treasures, I liked the Chelsea Detective.

I agree, a hidden gem. The Chelsea detective was a brilliant show, great actors. Not sure about the new Bergerac, seen a few glimpses, seems rather angst. John Nettles, now he is Bergerac, and see there are reruns on Drama, main tv.

I went to Jersey in the 1980s on the basis of watching Bergerac.

I loved the Phillipa Vale episodes - so much fun in their battle of wits between police and jewel thief.

I wish they had written girlfriend "Susan" out at a much earlier stage - the toxic relationship really dragged. It was almost a relief when she was murdered.

The Ice Maiden, a likeable sort of criminal and one Bergerac seemed friendlier towards than more violent and unpleasant characters he had to deal with.

Cold - Oh dear poor Susan. But I get what you mean. i wish they had made more of the relationship between Bergerac and Phillipa. To me there was a real 'spark' ha ha. I have not been to jersey. However, I once did fly over it and it looked exactly like it does at he start. A yellow line all around it. I will never forget that. the number of people on that plane saying 'ooo look at Jersey'!! The pilot informed us when to look out of the window.

I have watched Bergerac on Drama in the last 10 years, very well made.
Also Lovejoy and the original All Creatures Great and Small.

When All Creatures was originally on in the 1970 - 80’s, my son and I watched it avidly. I’d shout ‘Uncle Herriots on’.

I loved Bergerac, but its age is showing now. The Charlie character is a particular anachronism. Still, I suppose it is Jersey. Things don't move very quickly over there. grin

Bergerac was always a staple of Saturday night viewing years ago. Loved it. I understand Phil Glenister is in the remake. Got to be worth watching just for him. ❤️. The Gene genie reincarnated. Cant wait.

Oh yes, I completely agree! grin

I think I will have to just view it as completely new. I did the same with the new Van der Valk. It was nothing like the original. The original was far more gentle in all aspects.

essjay Tue 28-Jan-25 13:58:40

will watch the remake with interest, but as so many of you have said it will be hard to top John Nettles and remakes do not always fare well - did not like the remake of Van der Valk

I fell in love with Jersey all those years ago when I watched the original Bergerac. Son number 2 now lives there so being a dutiful mother I have to visit every other month, the things we do for love. They were filming the new version when I was there last year so I really look forward to seeing it next month.

grandMattie Tue 28-Jan-25 13:25:51

We loved Bergerac. We lived in Jersey at the time it was being shown, dined at Diamond Lil’s, etc.

leeds22 Tue 28-Jan-25 12:51:49

We rewatched Bergerac during lockdown. Then went to Jersey for a holiday. Would not want to see a remake, they are rarely as good as the originals.

Cossy Tue 28-Jan-25 12:49:17

Love Bergerac and John Nettles and Jersey and I won’t be watching the remake.

I don’t like remakes as general rule

Love John nettles especially loved him in midsomer murders too .

MaizieD Mon 27-Jan-25 18:51:46

You're not alone by any means. We loved it.

I wouldn't care to see a newer version. It just wouldn't be the same.
