Something Gentle

I've just got a firestick for the TV and it seems I can access quite a few channels to say the least.
Life is a little tough at the moment, so I'm wondering if you kind GN's can recommend some gentle series/films for me to watch.
My friends have been raving about Grey's Anatomy for ages. I've just tried to watch it from the first episode, but I've had to stop as some of the scenes are 'too close to home'.
Thank you for any suggestions x

I love Colin from Accounts and also Schitt's Creek is brilliant

Schitts Creek. Best series ever. People who haven’t seen it don’t know what they’re missing. 😂

Another vote for Five Bedrooms.

Also All Creatures Great and Small and What We Did on Our Holidays (love that film).

we've just finished 'man on the the inside' on netflix which was nice smile

Young Sheldon on Netflix from the first episode. Also on E4 but not always from the earliest.

Life in Pieces is great.

I really must catch up on that, started watching it in Australia years ago but never got round to continuing it here.

A Place to Call Home. Wonderful cast, scenery and the costumes.

I'll second that.

Pittcity

This is Us is a great long series about an American Family.
Five bedrooms is a lovely Australian series.

I second This Is Us, I watched it when it first came out on Channel 4 and recently watched the whole thing again on Amazon Prime. I liked Five Bedrooms too.

Darby and Joan on Prime, with Greta Saatchi and Brian Brown.
Mystery drama, set in Australia, a short series but enjoyable.

On U.K.T.V.play, A Million Little Things, a great series with lots of characters and drama. It's an American series, starts off when one of their circle dies, and it is all the fall out for all of them after that. It's a very well acted series, easy to immerse yourself in, I recommend it.

Another vote for Detectorists. Such a well-made and gentle programme.

So many good suggestions.

Yes, Fishermen's Friends

The Marlow Murder Club (more lighthearted than its name suggests)
What We Did on our Holidays - there are arguments, yes, but it is a great film with Billy Connolly.

Davida1968 Thu 13-Feb-25 10:59:48

Oh yes to Detectorists. Gentle, brilliant cast, fabulous countryside. Grace and Frankie is excellent too, with (older!) Jane Fonda & Lily Tomlin on top form. You need to stick with the first few episodes to establish what's happening but it's worth it!

Joplin Thu 13-Feb-25 03:00:45

Definitely Fisherman’s Friends. And yes, All Creatures Great and Small, either the old version of the newer one.

Like Pittcity, I so enjoyed Five Bedrroms, an Australian series, and I’m also in the middle of watching This is Us. The Australian series, Bump, on BBC 1 is also enjoyable.

Another vote for This Is Us
Gilmore Girls
Parenthood - rarely see recommendations for this but it's quite funny, gentle. Netflix.

I've gone off Virgin River, after binge watching previous series - feels like they just stomp around the same places and misunderstand each other episode after episode, while the main actors look doe eyed at each other.

I second and third “Detectorists’ its lovely AND its British

Can definitely recommend Dave Loan Ranger. No sex / swearing / violence. Just good entertainment for a good film. Even my granddaughter (23 years old) enjoyed it and said it was a good film.

A fire stick may need a subscription to Netflix if it doesnt come with it, but imo worth having.

MaggsMcG Wed 12-Feb-25 15:26:47

Grace & Frankie on Netflix. It's hilarious.

Jess20 Wed 12-Feb-25 15:16:38

Detectorists

Is Anne with an E still on Netflix, if so it is a good watch
And the bank of Dave and bank of Dave loan arranger.
Some of the canal journey programmes are a good gentle watch too and there are some programmes of people going for walks in lovely countryside, can't remember the names arm

lizzypopbottle Wed 12-Feb-25 14:22:00

I've been watching New Tricks on BBC iPlayer from the very first, pilot episode. Nothing graphic or violent apart from the occasional scuffle.

BridgetPark Wed 12-Feb-25 14:02:27

I also loved Five Bedrooms, a great series and so sad it finished, it was funny and witty and moving at the same time.
Also recommend A Small Light, the lead actress is amazing, its a great series, if a bit sad.
Apple Cider Vinegar is a very good watch, quite amazing the deception that went on.
