These two series are prequels to Yellowstone and are very good. Both are on Paramount Plus but 1883 is coming to Netflix on March 15th and I highly recommend it.

A second series of 1923 has just started, it stars Helen Mirren and Harrison Ford, it is only on Paramount Plus though.

I’ve watched both these and they were excellent especially liked 1883. Not sure I’ll be able to watch the new 1923 maybe when it’s on Netflix. Watch if you can.
I do wish they’d show the second part of the last Yellowstone series unless they did and I’ve missed it.

After watching 1883 and 1923 I did try to watch Yellowstone but found it underwhelming, perhaps I should give it another chance.

Jane it gets better as it goes on, give it another try.

I found 1883.. Fascinating and really liked it.
Then Yellowstone, gave up with it.

I plan to watch these on the recommendation of my daughter. Should I see them in chronological order, or does that not matter? Or is there a more appropriate order that would make sense?

Doodledog it doesn’t really matter as they are all stories of the same family line but are very watchable in their own right. I was halfway through Yellowstone when I found 1883 and it does bring the strong ties to the land in perspective. There is only one series of the older ones but loads of Yellowstone. Apparently there are going to be spin-offs of it for those interested involving Bet and Rips continuing story as Kevin Costner pulled out of the whole thing after a fallout.

We watched 1883 first, then we watched 1923 and had a hard time working out how the characters were related to the characters in 1883, they could be watched independently without a problem. As for Yellowstone, I only watched one episode and it seemed to be a more recent time.

We have just watched episode 1 of series 1 of 1923.
We enjoyed it but very graphic and disturbing in places.

I’ve got the dvd of 1883 but haven’t got round to watching it yet ( got waylaid by watching American Primeval and House of the Dragon). I’m looking forward to it, though. I found that the American actress playing the English girl in 1923 ruined the whole series for me. I found her accent so irritating. I don’t think I’ve ever been so irritated by one character in a series before.

Thanks tanith and Jane43. I plan to watch over the summer when I have more time to binge.

We're almost finishing watching Yellowstone, and loving it - so those are next on our watch list. I believe there is also a new spin-off, based on the 6666 ranch, which is due to come out later this year.

Just about to watch the last episode of 1883. At first I found it a bit lightweight compared to American Primeval, which I loved. But it’s grown on me. I now wish I’d watched it before 1923 as it would have made more sense of that. So may have to rewatch 1923 although that actress is still going to annoy me.

I’ve started rewatching 1923 but straight away the accents are annoying me.Not just Alex but Jerome Flynn’s Scottish accent and even Helen Mirren’s Irish accent isn’t the best. For a production that prides itself on attention ( and I can’t fault them in most things) to detail it’s sad that, as Americans, they don’t realise that the non American accents are so bad.

I think an extra son was added to 1923 who must have been born after 1883 ended which confused everybody. My daughter is obsessed with Yellowstone. I’m house sitting this weekend so can watch it there ( I don’t have Amazon or whatever it’s on). But there are an awful lot of series to get through ( I’ve only seen season one when it was on terrestrial tv). We both find Kelly Reilly mesmerising ( loved her in Britannia, too). I think she’s a Sue Ellen equivalent ( I used to love Dallas; it was always on when my first baby had three month colic and I always seemed to be watching it whilst walking round the living room in a sling…).
