£10 poms

We were planning to be £10 poms, along with our 5 children, right at the beginning of the 70s. We filled in all the application forms, including references, but my in-laws created such a fuss, "we`ll never see you again, etc", that in the end we never sent the forms off. Hubby was a brass bandsman, he`d been promised a place in a band in Tasmania, help in finding a job (he was a skilled tradesman) plusa house to rent until we managed to buy our own. I`ve often wondered how things would have turned out if we`d gone.

I nearly went, as my then boyfriend, just qualifying in architecture, got an offer from Wimpey of a job with accommodation for us over there. I'm glad we stayed in UK & Europe, though.

I enjoyed the whole series. Watching that made me very thankful that I said no, with good reason, when I was 15. My parents came to chat to me and listened to my answer. Six younger siblings, I have never told them. We all did well in the UK

Realise I am behind with this, only watched the final episode last night.

Am I remembering this wrong, but I thought the very first series ended with Kate’s fiancé from the UK getting on a boat to come over to Oz to find her?

They were supposed to be emigrating together, but she was just using him to get a passage over and trace her missing son.

As far as I recall, he has never been mentioned or appeared again!

Last night's was a good episode, that disturbing scene in the pub! And that tense ending with the family rescued from the gas.

There is another Aussie book out this week, set in 1978 - getting really good reviews;

The Grapevine by Katy Kemp.

Its on my wish list (I'm big on Audible).

@kittylester - I did wonder about that, although the sign at the entrance was spelled hostel. I guess by series 2 the newbies are starting to acquire the Aussie accent/dialect!

I enjoyed the first series but found episode 1 of the new series a bit tedious. And why do they keep saying “host-Elle” instead of hostel?

Maybe for the same reason that characters in Aussie soaps pronounce ‘crèche’ as ‘craysh’. That was just one irritant when dds were addicted to Neighbours and Home and Away!

Enjoyed last night’s episode. Love the scenery, clothes, cars etc.

Reminds me of my best ever prog from Australia “A Place to call home.”

I think if I had my time over again I might consider moving to Australia.

My husband’s parents were all set to start a new life in New Zealand but his Mum pulled out at the last minute and refused to go. His Dad never forgave her for that especially as his friend and family went out at the same time and they enjoyed a wonderful lifestyle.

Enjoyed the first series, all a bit different, and enjoyed last night's too. Trying to remember one or two storylines was a bit difficult though!

Absolutely, Grandmarderby and that is why my mother would not go unless they could afford to return if things did not go well. A sensible precaution that not all could afford to do.
I loved the scenery in the first episode but was not too keen on the storyline. As someone said it was difficult to pick up the threads from the first series.

The Australians say 'Hostelle'.

As DH had a professional qualification much needed there, we were encourage to go to Australia with the promise of a house and a job as soon as we landed. We ended up in a hostelle. First disappointment - more followed and we came home after a year.

It’s nearly 2 years since the first series was shown, so can’t remember lots of it.

Didn’t Kate steal the getaway vehicle from someone, and also broke in somewhere to find paperwork? Surely she wouldn’t have been allowed to just return to the hostel place and go back to how it all was before?

I like the builder chap, looks like his new boss is a wrong ‘un though. Not keen on his wife or family.

Indeed it was, I believe. My parents were lucky in that my mother had a sister ,married to an Australian,who lived in Sydney with whom we were able to live until we acquired our own bungalow. However my mother didn’t find the” natives”friendly and they fortunately had enough money to buy return tickets. Many others apparently were very envious as the number wanting to return to the UK but couldn’t was considerable.

I remember reading the brochures which were sent to my DB and DSisIL when they applied for the £10 POM scheme. It all looked idyllic, lovely houses and jobs a-plenty.
I'd have been about 15 at the time and was really taken with the idea. However, they didn't go in the end; perhaps the reality might have been quite different from what was promised.

It is “lite” drama so perfect imo for 8 O’clock on a Sunday evening.
I watched the first series and thought that would be it but I’ll give it a whirl.

Calendargirl there won’t be second series of Three Little Birds , Lenny Henry has said ITV will not be recommissioning it due to low viewing figures.

He said he was dismayed but will turn it into a book(s) instead -as he had already written a second series.

He also said that “black dramas” frequently only run for one series and that there was a worrying trend for all new dramas/shows to be given “just one shot”due to cuts at itv spending because of a downturn in advertising and hence commissioning.
So a vicious circle really…but all down to money.

I personally thought it was a little “too lite” but still enjoyed it.
Maybe the critics were expecting something grittier from Lenny?

Lenny has a point though and I think when I watch Call The Midwife ..how many series are we at now..and how sickly are they since they’ve been written “off the books”- that I watch because I’ve got to know the characters.

I intend to watch it as I was a £10 Pom. I know it isn’t realistic but I like to watch for the scenery (was it actually filmed in Australia ?) and to see the kind of clothes they wore etc. I often wonder what it would have been like if my parents hadn’t returned to the UK disillusioned.
