Anyone else watching this? Series 2 now, I really like it, very lightweight, but entertaining. Men will hate it, because it’s about middle aged women helping a female police detective solve murders in a small Thames side town. Available on Channel U on Freeview.

I was on a jury for a murder trial, it didn't feel a bit like how it does when you watch it on TV.

No, it's not! Well, not like the Marlow Murder Club anyway.

JdotJ I can get sub-titles when I watch it. I like it because the four women are so very different and with such varied backstories.

On your recommendation dempie55 I've just watched the first 2 episodes of series 1. It's very Miss Marple - and I love Agatha Christie, but possibly because they're set in a bygone age. Yes, it was twee, and slightly irritating, but I expect I'll watch ep 3 & 4 at a later date, so thank you for the heads up.

In a similar vein, I'm looking forward to the TV Richard Coles vicar murders in the autumn because I like the books. I can't take to the Richard Osman books - sorry. However if Chris Columbus is directing the film with an amazing cast (Helen Mirren, Pierce Brosnan, Ben Kingsley, Celia Imrie, David Tennant, Jonathan Pryce, Daniel Mays, Richard E. Grant) I may force myself to reconsider!

"Men will hate it, because it’s about middle aged women helping a female police detective solve murders in a small Thames side town".......not so OP....my OH really enjoys it. We have watched all the new episodes this week.

I do think we are fascinated by the darkness- fantasy and horror help us to face our fears I think, and tales of blood and gore are as old as time.

What I don't understand are the murder in the vicarage kind of fiction/drama where the dark aspects of murder are somehow sanitised and made 'clean' for I suppose respectable people.

Maybe it is all a matter of taste but I do think we are obsessed by this murder mystery aspect and especially making it about the culprit and the methodology rather than the victim?

Each to their own I suppose...

All we seem to watch is murders, to the extent I am beginning to feel it is unhealthy to be going to bed on top of such a viewing diet.
How do people who live alone cope with such stuff before bedtime - or indeed any time?
I can just about cope with the semi-comical stuff or even Vera or Morse but DH has a penchant for those horrible dark scandi-noirs which are starting to give me the willies.

What's 'entertaining' about someone being murdered? Or will this label me as being 'woke?'

Well, I did say to DH the other day that, if it wasn't for murders, there's be nothing on the TV.

Why?

Very cosy and middle England/class and dare I say it, a bit twee. I think you have to be either aspirational or come from a 'nice, good' background to appreciate it. I'm not and I don't.

However, I am a great fan of Samantha Bond and she is very good.

I think it is a bit of a blanket statement OP to say ^Men will hate it.^

Oh, I'm aspirational!

I just knew I wanted a car and a telephone when I grew up from the age of about 10. 😁

I’m going to pay more attention to that strap thingy at the back when assembling a flat pack bookcase now.

I love a murder mystery but often think how unusual it is that we're so hooked on them. From Shakespeare to Shakespeare and Hathaway, Agatha Christie to Agatha Raisin our bookshelves and TVs would be sparse without crime and detective stories.

Is it that we like solving puzzles? Or that the bad guy mostly gets caught? I bet someone clever knows the answer.

Really enjoying it, cosy crime is my thing at the moment. How Jenny managed to devise that murder was unbelievable, but fun!

Thank you Clawdy. Couldn't be bothered to watch second part but idlely wondered who did it!
The victim was an actor who appeared in a lot of costume dramas in his youth. What was his name?

nb

Stuck with it until the three sleuths careered around the streets on one mobility scooter (give me strength).

Oh dear- I thought it was dreadful! I watched the first series, was not impressed, and thought I'd give it another go with this second series to see if it has improved - and in my opinion, it hasn't! Though it features lovely countryside and lovely properties, I'm afraid the stories are not remotely believable. Pity.

They're probably not supposed to be believable.

Like all those 'cozy murder books' - a contradiction in terms if ever there was one!

NanKate Fri 21-Mar-25 21:54:25

JdotJ I recorded the programme and got subtitles. If you watched it directly from the tv you can usually access subtitles by pressing the down arrow and move to where it shows the word subtitles on/off.

NanKate Fri 21-Mar-25 21:51:11

I’m lucky enough to live in Marlow, so DH and I spent most of the programme naming the streets in this the far fetched series. I am enjoying it though.

The Strawberry Grove cafe they featured at the beginning of episode 1, is a genuine cafe.

Deedaa Fri 21-Mar-25 20:59:18

I enjoy it. Obviously farfetched, but a pleasant way to spend an hour ans some lovely scenery. I like the Chelsea Detective as well. It makes a change after all the slick police series.

JdotJ Fri 21-Mar-25 20:43:38

I would very much like to watch this but am unable to as the channel its on doesn't have subtitles!
