New Sunday night series. I'm binge watching. It's complicated but very good. Some old faces, Sean Bean and Julie Graham and some new faces too. If you like gangster type programmes you probably enjoy this.

I watched half an hour of episode one. I enjoy drug dealing Liverpool gangs on tv usually but found this too dark and the accents extreme
Reading this thread is encouraging me to try again

I tried the first one but didn't like one of them. Tge wives as bad. Everything now is so violent and I feel sure it is desensitising people.

The long suffering WAGs are happy enough to turn a blind eye to how they are able to live in lovely houses, drive expensive cars and enjoy fabulous holidays though.

Cumbrianmale56 Fri 18-Apr-25 21:12:40

I've binge watched it tonight and they really are a bunch of nasty, hateful villains who deserve everything that happen to them. However, the actresses who play their long suffering WAGs are the real stars.

Calendargirl Fri 11-Apr-25 20:48:09

The actress playing Michael’s wife is the sister in ‘Belgravia’,

Couldn’t be a more different part, spinster living at home with mother, and fancying the local vicar.

Sorry ferry23,
I didn't make the connection
Now I shall see what you see!
Arghhh!!!! 🥴

ferry23 Fri 11-Apr-25 19:17:15

Look you lot, can you stop calling him "Mr. Bean" because every time I read that I see Rowan Atkinson talking about cocaine supply lines, line dancing to House of Bamboo and brutally stabbed to death on his sun lounger. grin

Ilovedogs22 Fri 11-Apr-25 19:00:10

Yes ferry23, It's strange how we can be drawn to certain individuals and yet repelled by others, both in reality & on the TV.
I just found her a bit arrogant & it's not the first time I've felt this vibe eminating from her, regardless of the role she's playing.
So apart from "She" & her
over-acting, it's a brilliant series.
Pity though, that Mr Bean's part was so very brief, he has such power & charisma yet he scares the beejesusout of me too.! 🥴

Cumbrianmale56 Fri 11-Apr-25 18:29:23

Julie Graham is Scottish, but puts on a really good Liverpool accent. On the whole, this is a great drama and the violence is never over done.

I'm rather enjoying this drama, the acting is fabulous and very believable.
Julie Graham is brilliant as the matriarch as is Nelson Joyce as the young sucessor to Mr Bean's character.
My only quibble is the actress who plays Nelson Joyce's girlfriend.
Her acting is very contrived and wooden, she's not a natural & she spoils the authenticity of the family. Which is otherwise spot-on and completely riveting if somewhat alarming at times. 🤔

Ah, how we all see things differently - I thought she was stand out.

And wouldn't the world be a boring place if we all thought the same!

I'm enjoying This City Is Ours and a shame Sean Bean was only in two episodes, but the other cast members are really good. Also liked how a little used laundrette was used to hide millions of pounds worth of drugs, it's rather like many of these American candy stores that hardly anyone uses are used as a respectable front for organised crime.

I had to give up my binge session at 2.30am this morning, I couldn't stay awake any longer!

Admittedly it's a bit brutal in places but so good. I've liked James Nelson-Joyce since he appeared in Little Boy Blue and I really hope this leads him on to bigger & better things. Apparently he's already being touted as the next 007.

Great soundtrack as well - downloaded it from BBC website, but can't get House of Bamboo out of my mind now. grin

I understand there's been some criticism of the non Liverpudlians attempts at the accent but as I'm but a boring Southerner it didn't affect me.

I binge watched this days ago and still have The House Of Bamboo going round in my head...the series is great, and so is the soundtrack.

^Sean Bean…no longer the pretty boy either^

Perhaps not, but still very watchable though.

😍

Oh yes Calendargirl, Mr Bean is very watchable, there's a firey intensity about him.
He plays the part very well, totally convincing. Although fortunately,
I have never met a crime boss, some weidos & pervert- flashers but never a mobster. 😳

I read today on the BBC news app that there will probably be a second series.

I hope there will be and I hope the wait won't be too long.

I see Line of Duty is due to start filming next year which means it probably won't be aired until 2027. A programme that had a good number of us gripped but who will remember what went before by the time it gets to our screens? (Or care for that matter).

I do start to lose my enthusiasm when you have to wait years for the next series.

It features the actress who played Smithy's girlfriend in the last 2 episodes of Gavin and Stacey putting on an OK Liverpool accent. Also Sean Bean is excellent as an ageing gangster.

Sean Bean is flipping terrifying as the head honcho!
No longer the prettyboy either. This series is very watchable, apart from when I'm hiding behind my hands!
All the cast are fantastic too. It's good to have something decent to watch after all the anti-climatic claptrap recently. 🤔

I have watched it I wouldn’t comment about a programme unless I had. I find it hard to believe a hard nosed family line dancing I just can’t imagine it.

It does look daft but I agree with Pittcity. The dance is a symbol of loyalty and if you don't join in it's noted. What a good series this has been. I expect a follow up now to find out if Michael and Diana do get out.

I think there will be second series, Julie Graham’s character said to Michael in the last episode, “This isn’t over.”

Laura Aikman is a very versatile actress, she played Dyan Cannon, Cary Grant’s wife, in the film Archie.

Hi glamourgran, funny you should say that the The Gangs of London had appalling levels of violence and that you were shocked.
Yet you recommended the crime series Kin, which I simply couldn't watch due to its stomach -turning brutality!
I turned over after about half an hour of watching it & it still makes me feel queasy.
Maybe, I should stick to Midsummer murders or the always brilliant Shakespeare & Hathaway on the BBC IPlayer🤔

Sorry Redhead, didn't mean to sound rude.

The dance is a metaphor for sticking together, moving in the same direction and showing togetherness at every opportunity.
This is the image that the "family" wanted to portray. We know that this image is far from the truth.
I agree that it's artistic license that wouldn't happen IRL.

The blinking song is still playing in my head though!
