The Liver Birds

This must be one of the most popular seventies sitcoms never to have been repeated for decades. It was actually quite true to life- two hard up girls sharing a flat, trying to find a decent job, trying to meet Mr Right( often failing), and getting into well meaning scrapes. The Polly James era episodes in particular are hilarious and Molly Sugden takes a good role as well. Was anyone else a fan?

I was!

My parents and grandparents were big fans and I used to like the hippy with his rabbits.

I was! Especially as I know Allerton, where their flat was, very well.

Molly Sugden was brilliant, with her absurd snobberies.

Oh yes, Lucian and his rabbits 😀

Or was Lucian in something else?

And who played Lucian?

Lucien - Michael Angelis

I think a young John Nettles broke into television via The Liver Birds.

I also loved it. I have a couple of friends from Liverpool and every time they speak I think of the Liver Birds. I love the accent and the sense of humour that seems to go with it.

It was a classic sitcom that always makes people of a certain age laugh. Always loved the fashions Nerys Hughes wore like the hotpants and boots.

We may have been in London but they were just like my best friend and me. We loved it.

Loved it, and Polly James was so funny. She was a salt of the earth character with no pretentions.
One of the funniest lines I remember was when she returned home one night after a romantic night out with a boyfriend she enthused about him to Nerys Hughes, saying "He's in love with me mind".
Of course this didn't sound quite right.....!!!!

The earlier series with Polly James were funnier as a lot of the time it was about two young women getting into scrapes, having endless boyfriend issues and trying to make ends meet. The later series with Elizabeth Estensen were still watchable, but a lot of episodes concentrated too much on animal rights and vegetarianism, which were Carla Lane's big causes. Interestingly not long after The Liver Birds finished, Nerys Hughes made adverts for a frozen poultry company.
