Did anyone watch this last night on Channel 5?
It was all about the lead up to Princess Anne and Mark Phillips wedding back in 1973, then the actual day itself and afterwards.
It was a Bank Holiday so I was able to have the day off. Mum and I went to our sister’s house to watch it as she had a colour tv, and we didn’t.
Princess Anne has never looked more attractive than that day, her gown was gorgeous, far nicer than Diana’s meringue a few years later.
But the star of the show for me was the best man, Eric Grounds, a fellow officer of Mark Phillips. He looked the epitome of a former guardsman, stiff upper lip type, and his insight into that day, over 50 years ago, was interesting, humorous, and at times, very emotional for him as he spoke of his feelings at finding himself in the Abbey on such an occasion and being on the balcony with his monarch and her family.
Although like so many others, the marriage didn’t last, it was still a lovely moment in our royal history.
