THE GOOD WIFE streaming on Channel 5

Has anyone watched The Good Wife? It's an American drama in 7 series and I am totally addicted.

It's set in a high powered Chicago lawyers' practice, and each episode covers one of their cases but there are also good backstories for each of the main lawyers - affairs, marital problems, family relationships.

It's well scripted and acted and knocks spots off the usual Channel 5 dramas eg. The Feud.

It's great to think every day that I've got a good drama to watch and I'm keen to know how the complicated relationships and affairs pan out.

I absolutely love The Good Wife. It is such an intelligent series - lots of background re US political shenanigans (which are pretty awful) and information about their legal system. Plus the characters are really believable.

I actually saw some of it when it was first shown - about 8 years ago I think. It's interesting that the two investigative women are both English actors - Archie Panchabi (I remember her from East is East) and, in later series, Cush Jumbo (who I remember from, I think, Vera).

In the Good Fight they have a lot of British actors in lead roles

Cush Jumbo - who plays Lucca - was detective Bethany who got shot dead in Vera

Rose Leslie - who plays Maia Rindell - has been in a lot of things including Vigil where she played one of the detective leads

Michael Sheen the Welsh actor also appears in a number of episodes

This was such a good series which I enjoyed.
There was also a spin off called The Good Fight which only lasted two series.
At the moment there is also another spin off from the original series called Elsbeth. Elsbeth was the funny, seemingly confused lawyer on The Good Wife. It has just started the second series on Sky Witness.

The Good Fight ran for 6 series (I'm currently in series 4)

For fans of The Good Wife, there's a spin off series called The Good Fight to be found on U which can be streamed free. It's looking good and I'm hooked in again already.

I'm just watching it for the second time around.
It's very, very cleverly done. Subtly witty and brilliant acting.
I wasn't so keen on the Good Fight but I'm watching Elspeth and quite enjoying it.

Sorry. My mistake. Should read Alan Cumming who plays Eli Gold.

Aveline Wed 21-May-25 18:24:19

Alan Cummings?

Eloethan Wed 21-May-25 13:47:31

I didn't realise Alec Cummings was Scottish. He's great in it too.

Sparklefizz Sun 18-May-25 20:57:33

Plus Alec Cummings, who plays Eli Gold, is Scottish.

... and I love the clothes the women are wearing!

I'm on Series 4 at the moment and totally addicted. I can't fault it at all and will be bereft when I get to the end.

I'm not surprised it won stacks of awards DrWatson. Well deserved in my opinion.

SparklyGrandma Wed 14-May-25 04:40:10

The Good Wife, then The Good Fight are both good series worth enjoying and watching.

For 'Sparkle' - I wasn't aware this show had reappeared on Channel5. It IS on '5 USA' in the early hours, but you can record of course.

For anyone still unaware of the show, it was one of the very best of dramas in the last 2 decades, superb acting, great multi-threaded scripts with some topics per episode, and other long-running ones.

Two of the main cast were Brits, of course, Alan Cumming and Archie Panjabi. Overall it won stacks of awards, and deservedly so.

It does delve deeply into the sleazy and cynical areas of American politics, maybe Chump had his campaign team watching to pick up some hints?!

I'll have to have a look at this. I've been wanting another drama to get into!

Maria59 Tue 13-May-25 17:27:44

We are watching it now. We are up to series 5 and finding it very addictive 😀

cc Tue 13-May-25 16:13:21

It was originally on in 2009 and I watched it then, it's very good but tails off a little towards the end I think.

Aveline

I've watched it all and the next series too. I was sorry it ended.

Missed it first time round but I have now binge watched it; fabulous series

Camry1952 Tue 13-May-25 15:15:48

Yes I'm from the US and missed it when it started. I am addicted too! So much drama in that series. I can't wait to see what happens next!

Sparklefizz Mon 12-May-25 17:59:18

Ah, ok. I'm not sure I'd be keen on a whole series based on Elsbeth either.

Aveline Mon 12-May-25 16:06:24

Sparklefizz I did really mean series. I've watched all the episodes and also all of the spin off series 'The Good Fight'. I didn't like 'Elsbeth'. She was just too irritating somehow.

keepingquiet Mon 12-May-25 12:59:59

My daughter loved this series. I hink it's quite old now. I've never got into it.

PammyHoops Mon 12-May-25 12:44:09

Thanks. I have been wanting to watch this but I don’t have all the streaming channels.
Just registered on Channel 5 and watching now.

Aveline If you have only watched 2 series, there are another 5 streaming free on Channel 5. I'm halfway through Series 3 at the moment.

I've watched it all and the next series too. I was sorry it ended.
