I'm not a fan and haven't watched it for years, but I've just heard the UK's entry on the radio and I actually thought it was quite a catchy little number.

Maybe we'll get somewhere this year!

I am old enough to rememnber when Brothehood Of Man won in 1976 and this proved to be the career boost the group needed as they hadn't had a hit for years and had a string of hits off the back of their Eurovision win,
The following year saw Lynsey De Paul enter with Rock Bottom and she was narrowly beaten by France. Rock Bottom was also her last hit before she moved into making television music and making jiu jitsu videos( check on Google).

Not sure if this link works but it could easily be Radiohead…

Having to watch Eurovision is akin to torture for me. However, to each their own and I hope those who enjoy it have a great night.

I know a few people who watch it all, even the semi-finals, that's about 6 hrs of your life you won't get back.

For those who like it, how many great songs have emerged from it? I make it one, ABBA'a breakout hit in the 70s, which I'm pretty sure would have won in any year. Other than that, wall to wall dross?

I'm advised, for those hoping our entry will do well, that it's being heavily tipped to finish last or next to. The Ryder entry shows that we CAN actually find something to attract votes?

Oh, and apparently the Finland entry is being tipped to be in the top-3, and the German entry is supposedly better than usual (low bar I'd guess?!).

I remember this being a standout song at the time. I wonder if Eurovision would have survived if it hadn’t evolved into the gay fest it is now?

One person’s trash is another person’s fun.

I think Sam Ryder only missed out to Ukraine, Bluebelle, in very unusual circumstances.

MayBee70 Sat 17-May-25 07:30:17

It isn’t easy to create a song that’s instantly likeable. And it’s also about who can give the greatest live performance on the night. There are many songs from over the Eurovision years that I go back and listen to and I think I have a pretty eclectic taste in music. Anyway, with Eurovision, you either get it or you don’t. I don’t feel that I’ve wasted six hours of my life this week and I’ll probably rewatch the semis as some of the songs I liked didn’t get through to the final.

Why can’t you be there annifrance ? . My son’s gay and he and his friends have a Eurovision party that everyone is invited to. Even myself and DH .

annifrance Fri 16-May-25 19:01:04

PS, expecting the usual sanctimonious responses!

annifrance Fri 16-May-25 18:58:12

I haven't watched for decafrs, it so doesn't rock my bost. But recently I have been made aware that it is a major Gay Fest. My very dear gay friends make a major weekend party about it. I am so sorry that as a confirmed heterosexual I am ineligible for an invitation! I wish them a fantastic weekend in Brive la Gaillarde with other gay friends. I do wish I could be there. Love the all. Every girl needs gay friends, they are amazing ,supportive and with them I can just be me and not judged. Go Pride.

I m not a fan at all I have dipped in and out of the first semi and it reminded me why I don’t like it so haven’t gone any further
I might watch the voting as I always find that rather entertaining seeing us come near the bottom 🤣except for the lovely Sam Ryder who I thought was excellent and should have won

It’s appalling that Israel are entered. Their contribution is favourite and last year they won.

Switzerland won last year. Israel were 5th.

We are rooting for Spain and Sweden. That sad wee song about the space dog Laika was voted out.

That really upset me. I still feel sad about poor Laika and making a song about her partying in space when she died there is just plain wrong!

Bazza Fri 16-May-25 18:13:47

Definitely not for me, but flicking around I saw Australia’s song. Australia?! That well know European country. I understand they were eliminated but had they won would they have hosted next year?

Sweden, Austria and France are favourites.

I was appalled that they got through to the final. Part of me wants to boycott watching it but I love it so much. I don’t like the song at all.

I think Netta in 2018 was pretty bonkers!

petra Fri 16-May-25 16:49:08

I loved it when they allowed all the oddballs to sing? their strange ditties.
Now it’s all very proper.😥

Nagmad2016 Fri 16-May-25 16:32:52

I enjoy listening to the music but I find that all the flashing lights and strobe lighting spoil it for me and I have to switch it off. I wish they could tone it down and concentrate more on the music and the acts.

Growing0ldDisgracefully Fri 16-May-25 16:23:16

Never been very keen on it but watched it when Sam Ryder was our representative. I thought that actually ours was the best entry but Ukraine won, I suspect there was an element of sympathy voting, as I thought their entry was dreadful. I guess we all have different tastes in music. I'll either see if I can get one of RosiesMaw's pills, or find something else to watch.

Love Eurovision, watched it since I was a child. I have suffered ridicule over the years but now it’s cool again and we have a little family Eurovision party. Good times. I think our song is quite good and well performed but we won’t win, I always look up the betting odds and we’re likely to place around 11th.

I know people that make a lot of money betting on Eurovision and were betting on the two favourites ages ago.I don’t know why so many people knock it. It brings a lot of pleasure to a lot of people. It’s ( imo) joyous.

Love it Maw! I remember watching it with my Mum way back. I think Katie Boyle was the presenter! 😂
