FANS of Eurovision

I have to agree with you nanna8 what's to stop other countries around the world joining? Australia and Israel are not European but then again, it would be an all- night job watching all the contestants

I often wondered why non European countries were invited into Eurovision and also Britains Got Talent ..many people from outside of Britain enter 🙅🏻‍♀️

I am Australian and I think it is ridiculous that we are involved with the Eurovision Song Contest. We are not Europeans and never will be. Neither are Israelis come to that.

I think it’s fine for other countries to join if they predominantly speak a European language. I’m not sure how Australia and New Zealand would fit in to an equivalent contest, as their popular music is so different to that of their nearest neighbours.

So have I, and decided to do a quick 'Google'...

According to a poster on reddit, the only requirement to qualify for participation in Eurovision is that the country be a member of the European Broadcasting Union.

Assuming this is true and that Australia and Israel are members of the EBU. this would explain the anomaly.

As for BGT, a spokesperson said, "Britain's got talent features a range of home-grown talent, alongside some overseas acts. It's a testament to the international success of past acts such as Susan Boyle and Paul Potts that overseas acts want to audition for the UK show."

... but that doesn't really explain it at all really does it? Perhaps it's more to do with international acts drawing in a larger audience and generating more money... who knows?

We came to our holiday lodge with our two besties, we really entered into the spirit of things, we hung up bunting, made flags, and stayed up til the dire end! Few drinks were had and a fun night!

Oh and we made and wore has 😂😂😂

We got through with the help of Eurovision bingo.

Well am looking forward to seeing AUSTRIA next year on TV😀

I loved the Estonia performance and was disappointed they didn’t win. The silly dance was very funny.

I was confused during the voting period each time the camera zoomed in on the Austrian singer. I couldn’t recall anything about his performance and thought it must have been instantly forgettable .

It was only when he did his winner’s finale that I realised I’d made a cuppa during the show and didn’t bother to pause the tv. Austria must have performed while I was boiling the kettle . I saw the entire show apart from the winner 😆

I think liking a falsetto voice generally is a bit of a marmite thing. I thought the young Austrian man was a fab singer, and simple effective lyrics.

Yup. I like quite a bit of classical music with a falsetto voice, its got to be a good one to work, and the young man's voice had real power and accuracy of tone, not a falter on the very highest notes.

I’ve seen it several times including in the semis and on utube and still can’t remember anything about the song other than the voice. If you asked me to hum a bit of it I couldn’t. If that had been a woman singing that particular song in soprano I doubt if it would have even got to the final.I’m totally flummoxed by it.

A falsetto voice isnt like a soprano voice. It's been used in loads of bands through pop history. Think back to the Beach boys for example who used it a lot...Freddie Mercury (Queen)..

I like simple songs with a simple presentation.But there has to be something magical about them and I could find no magic in the Austrian song. I suppose I’m biased in that I’m not a Queen, Beach Boys or Bee Gees fan. I think a young girl won in recent years with a sweet little song ( can’t remember who it was, though).

I wasn't going to watch it this year but here I am. I really rated Austria's entry- what an extraordinary voice!
Otherise it seems the usual Eurovision fayre...

I thought it was extraordinary too.
Gave me goosebumps.
I called out to a relative that that one was likely to win!
[Though I cant blame anyone on here for not believing me at this point!].

I was surprised he was allowed to sing in Eurovision as he is something to do with the Vienna Opera.
Would that not make him a professional? I had assumed professionals were not allowed.

Me too! I thought it was hilarious, tongue in cheek fun - should have won and cheered us all up.

An internet friend who studies it in great depth pointed out that Switzerland and Israel are usually in the first four, which surprised me. I don’t think that people should have 20 votes.
