I didn’t see the programme, but I love the Scallop on Aldeburgh beach. The words “I hear those voices that will not be drowned” that it bears are from Benjamin Britten’s opera Peter Grimes. Britten lived in Aldeburgh and the opera is set there. There was quite a bit of opposition to the sculpture at the time, from people who thought it disfigured the long stretch of shingle. Someone spray painted “Tin can” on it.

I enjoyed watching the programme about Maggi Hambling .
What a feisty old dame !
She made me laugh and I quite like her work too .
I'm watching the programme on Lubaina Himid at the moment .
And later it's Edna O'Brien .

Tonight’s programme is about Lubaina Himid who I’ve never heard of. Followed by a two hour programme about the wonderful Edna O’Brien.

Followed Our Maggi
for years. Quite a few docs on her. So have a look at Youtube BBC iPlayer etc.

Maggi Hambling can be a very controversial figure but has actually quietened diwn as she has got older. Tells it like it is. Coudn't give a monkeys about what she says.

Complete original thoughts and opinions.A ibe off.

Let's sayshe likes a drink and a ciggy. Her favourite tipple would be a bottle of vodka and 100 Full Strength Woodbines.

This woman is s complete force of nature and a tremendous energy and talent.

Her seascapes are indescribaly beautiful.

Long Live Maggi Hambling

Glad you lucky people have discovered her.

Enjoy!!!

I wasn’t expecting her to be so warm and funny. Mind you, the only documentary I’ve ever seen about her was made a long time ago. I’m very envious of her cottage!

I thoroughly enjoyed the programme. I hadn't realised Maggi had been so ill, is it me ot has she softened a bit since then? She's still producing an amazing amount of work and I did like her portrait of Andy Murray.

It has been recorded so looking forward to it. Really like her work and she is such a character.. Always hope she doesn’t set fire to herself with the smoking and all that oil paint. Same with David Hockney. Love them both.

She had a heart attack and seems to have quit smoking; now vaping instead…

Have you seen this, on Aldeburgh beach?

Yes, I've seen it- really impressive and such a setting!

I've recorded this but haven't watched it yet. I've liked Maggi's work since I saw her years ago on the Art quiz that George Melly used to do.

Oh I used to love that quiz too- they should bring it back! Obviously not with George Melly though...

It was featured in the programme. I’d neither seen nor heard of it. It’s beautiful. Her large paintings are. Pollock like in that I can’t understand why I find them so pleasing to the eye but I do. There are more programmes in the series about artists that I know nothing about.Maggi is like David Hockney. They just live to paint and draw.

Just watched this. It’s repeated tomorrow night Ch 36 or 11. Never really knew much about her work but really like it after watching this programme. Not so much her drawings of people, but her large abstract works are wonderful.
