I think there have been quite a few discussions on GN about the book since its publication. We went to see the film this afternoon, mixed reviews, not an overwhelming 5 stars from some critics. I loved it, found it very affecting in the portrayal of the depth of Ray and Moth's relationship, a rock solid marriage facing insurmountable problems, losing their home, subsequently made homeless, related in flashbacks. Practically penniless bar the meagre weekly benefit they received drawn along the way, whilst they set off on what would seem an insane challenge given Moth's serious and rare illness. Set backs en route, not least of all the elements wreaking havoc on their flimsy tent whilst they undertake the daunting, but beautiful south west coastal walk, I love that part of the world one of the reasons that drew me to the book in the first place.. Fantastic acting particularly from Gillian Anderson and Jason Isaacs ultimately uplifting.

I wonder how Gigspanner and, to a lesser degree Angela Harding will react to this revelation?

Exactly what I thought. No one should feel bad about having been taken in - it's good to trust people - until you have a reason not to. And Raynor Wynn is obviously very convincing (although not much of a performer imho).

Has anyone not seen what has subsequently been written about the Salt Path, that it was based on lies? Here’s the article from the Observer. observer.co.uk/news/national/article/the-real-salt-path-how-the-couple-behind-a-bestseller-left-a-trail-of-debt-and-deceit

😩😩😩

hmm. hmm grin. grin

Going off to find a brick wall to bang my head against!

I've not long finished one of the best books I've ever read. It is "Raising Hare" by Chloe Dalton and it was a bestseller towards the end of last year. A "buzz" book as somebody called it, but it was so moving and the author a brilliant writer.

After the revelations about the author of The Salt Path, I'll be devastated if, in years to come, it is revealed that Chloe Dalton didn't in fact raise a hare.

The point is, the walk along the south-west coastal path may have been true, but the book was based on the premise that this couple had been unjustly treated and that the husband was suffering a terminal illness which miraculously went into remission because of the healing properties of their walk.
There was admiration for their fortitude and sympathy for their plight.
That is the deception, and people do not like being conned.

No doubt there will be a drama-documentary some time in the future about Tim and Sally Walker and their machinations, like the one about the couple who faked the husband's death while he hid in the house.

Mollygo Mon 07-Jul-25 18:45:49

On BBC news she says the accusation is wrong and she’s taking legal advice. There’s also doubt cast on the claims about Moth’s illness.
Could be more exciting than the film or the book!

I hope she’s been back and repaid the people that she stole from.

Yes - I take it you've read the Observer piece!

I read the book and soon realised it was fanciful, they came over as scroungers. I wouldn't see the film for that reason.

As merlotgran said at 18.17 today —+- as they say on mumsnet RTFT

Primrose at 17.22 spelled it out and (maybe a first for both of us) I agree with you Primrose. The Observer’s investigative journalism exposed these two yesterday. Keep up at the back

Finding Hildasay is probably a much better and more truthful book and I must buy it. At least I know that Christian and Jet did do the walk because they actually walked past me one day but I didn’t realise who they were!

If you read the Observer acticle from yesterday, it tells a totally different story, sadly. I was disappointed and felt so let down although did think it remarkable that Moth was still around. Presumably they have paid all their debts now.

I'll tell you what absolutely gets on my nerves, it's TV programmes with names like 'Help! We bought a village!' Making out that watching people struggling against their circumstances is entertaining. I've never seen that particular programme, but anything set in a chateau seems to come into the same category!

MollyNew Mon 07-Jul-25 17:41:15

I saw Raynor on the One Show and the story didn't interest me at the time but it does now! How can someone make up a story like this, generate loads of publicity, make a film and not expect to get found out? My son says she probably doesn't care as she's made plenty of money out of it, which I suppose was the object of the exercise. Apparently, they own a property in France too. Truth is often stranger than fiction.

Primrose53 Mon 07-Jul-25 17:22:23

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE read the thread.
We all know these fake adventurers have been exposed by The Observer investigative journalists. A GNetter told us this early yesterday morning.

There are now countless links to it on this thread as well as to a YouTube Video and other sources.

As someone said on another forum, wouldn’t it be great if the two actors involved starred in another film about Raynor and Moth (or whatever names they are currently using.) How they duped the public, publishers, film makers, TV chat shows, etc and how they were not exposed much earlier. That really would be worth watching! 🤣

I revised my positive opinion of the book after reading this article in The Observer yesterday observer.co.uk/news/national/article/the-salt-path-whats-in-the-book-and-what-the-observer-has-found

Glenfinnan Mon 07-Jul-25 17:10:04

I enjoyed the book .. but recently their story has been discredited! Not sure who to believe.. perhaps just enjoy the entertainment of the film!

mokryna Mon 07-Jul-25 17:01:17

There is a huge discussion on MS, so much so a 2nd thread had to be created.

Oh dear.

It really is rather easy to do some research! Google is your friend.

The main newspapers have also exposed them as liars, thieves and grifters - including The Times, The Observer and The Guardian.

Does nobody read previous posts in a thread?
The Observer article has been referred to many many times now

Glad you said that! Thought I was going mad! So many people starting their post with “Well, there was an article in……” RTT! as they say on MN!

I am amazed about how bad it is on GN as well.
Sometimes even on sensitive threads.

Barbadosbelle Mon 07-Jul-25 16:36:17

.

Glad you saw a film you enjoyed but please don't believe it - or the book.

In real life they are a couple of grifters who have lied, stolen and cheated leading to horrendous problems for others. His illness (CBD) is also contrived as no-one with his supposed illness could have survived as long as he claims.

Do a little research. Read the articles about them. The Times. The Guardian. The Observer. Many others.

Enjoy the book and film as a work of fiction - but do understand that that is all it is.

There have been reports in The Observer which have now appeared on bbc.news.co.uk see attached screenshots. I had intended to see the film but having read these news reports I will definitely not see it.
