Below deck sexual assault

Feeling conflicted about a reality show (how scripted is it really?) showing a drunken encounter between a predatory man and a drunk to the point of unconscious woman. Yes it got the conversation started but what are the long term implications for the people involved. That scene will be out there forever.

... just to be clear what this is about.

Personally I have no time for 'reality' shows - they appear to encourage a prurient interest in the sexual activities of the chosen cast, or demand that we watch them experience nauseating or traumatic encounters in the 'jungle' where they are, for example, compelled to stick their head in a box full of spiders or eat various insects - or otherwise humiliate themselves...

... all in the name of entertainment. Entertainment of the worst kind. Inevitable I suppose. And the producers will continue to push the boundaries.

Why are you watching this drivel? If no one watched these things they would have to put something really entertaining on...

One person's 'drivel' may be not be another's. What do you consider to be 'really entertaining'?

Life is stressful. Sometimes a little light entertainment is called for and who are you to judge what I choose to watch?

I'm certainly not judging your viewing habits - however, I'd hardly call a reality show that featured a "drunken encounter between a predatory man and a drunk to the point of unconscious woman" light entertainment! hmm

It sounds bizarre and not a programme that would interest me on any level. However , each to their own.

I watch this series as often on catch up when I can’t sleep due to severe OA and taking extra pain meds @2am - I saw this recent episode and yes the Captain was correct in terminating the Bosun due to his actions And, in the same episode, terminated the 2nd Stew for her inappropriate comments she made to the 3rd stew who was the female totally incapacitated due to alcohol but the Chief Stew did her duty of care towards her.. was glad the production crew stepped in when the Bosun naked entered her room ..

Oh it's all fake!

That was kind of the point. These young people go on these shows for fame but what happens to them afterwards. Sex without consent is a big issue and I can see why they would cover it and maybe it does open up the debate but what happens to that young man now? That incident is out there now and will follow him for life. How does his Mum feel about it.

She's probably very proud of him because he'll now have a successful media career which is the only reason people go on these shows. She will be telling people he's a celebrity now...

I haven't seen this programme: it's definitely not my cup of tea.
We all have our own preferences.

However, I think the article posted by Dickens above is excellent and gets to the heart of the matter.

What is fake?

keepingquiet Thu 05-Jun-25 15:46:57

All these shows are fake. The people in them are given scripts, the editors cut most of it out, they wear clothes provided by the TV companies and the scenes are set up to look real but there is little reality here.

To be fair I don't watch this particular series but they are pretty much all the same...

Bea65 Thu 05-Jun-25 15:55:52

Well I don't think this reality series is FAKE...so unless you've watched it ...
People spend a lot of money to go on a luxury short vacation onboard ..you see beautiful sights and ocean life...the crews are real people who have had to undergo specialist training to become Ships Captain/deckies/bosuns/interior crew etc...
Yes, there's cameras filming everything and I find this series enjoyable...but people do silly/strange/unethical things when alcohol is involved...
Don't be so dismissive keepingquiet

BTW Captain Jason...very handsome man and good character IMO
