The Archers continues to entertain a couple of million people every week, but anyone remember the Radio 2 15 minute soap called Waggoners Walk that ran from 1969 to 1980 and had 4 millon listeners. I can remember it being set in Golders Green and having a variety of characters. Waggoners Walk was quite a good listen and many people were upset when the BBC cancelled it to save money.

I remember Wagoners Walk! I used to enjoy it. Was it radio 2 or 4?

Radio 2, it used to be on in the afternoons and was popular in its day.

Was there a character called Abigail in it? My sister was expecting a baby in 1975 and was going to call her that if it was a girl, I seem to remember as a result of listening to that programme.

Did not happen, however, as she had a boy!

I think it took over from Mrs Dales Diary about a GP’s family.
I used to listen with my Mother.
I think it was for about 15 mins duration every teatime.

I only remember listening to Mrs Dale's Diary but the name Waggoners Walk does ring a bell.

I loved Waggoner's Walk! I was a young mother when it first started and looked forward to every episode.
Thankyou for bringing back happy memories of being in the house with two babies
As a PP has asked, there was a character in it called Abigail. She was the baby daughter of two characters in it.

I loved Waggoners Walk and listened to it without fail as I was doing the housework. I was a young mum then too, and hadn’t been married that long when it was on, (mid ‘60s) and I loved it. I also loved Mrs Dale’s Diary, although I used to tell her to stop being such a worryguts when she frequently said, ‘I’m so worried about Jim’. Jim was her doctor husband.
I also remember another radio ‘soap’ which included a couple of sisters. One was called Tracey, but I can’t remember the name of her older, more sensible, sister. Or perhaps that was Wagoners’ Walk? My memory isn’t what it was, that’s for sure. They were good though and it’s a shame the modern equvaetsvaren’t so good.

Waggoners Walk was broadcast in the afternoon and while I was only 12 when it finished, I do remember plenty of complaints to the BBC when it was cancelled. Also remember the jazzy theme tune.

I remember the plot lines so well…….Matt and his fortitude after the plane crash, his young Greek helper who tried to break away (seduced by a rich woman) but was still devoted to him. Also the Nash family and Debbie Franks. And George and Kath.

Such a good programme, why did the BBC not stick with it ?

Interesting that Carole Boyd (Lynda Snell ) played Shirley Edwards, the young woman longing for a baby but had problems. A completely different part from Lynda. It shows what a good actress Carole Boyd is…..so versatile.
