My Mom, Jayne

This is an interesting documentary about Jayne Mansfield, produced by her daughter Mariska Hargitay, who is also an actress.

Jayne died very young, at 34, leaving behind 4 young children. Watching it, I was reminded of how women in the 1950s and 60s were being judged almost purely on their looks no matter how clever or accomplished they were. JM was an excellent violinist and classical piano player who wanted to be a serious actress. She ended up as a "Marilyn Monroe clone".

Plus women got pregnant at the drop of a hat (or should that be, a pair of trousers). Enough to make me shudder at the thought of how little control they had over their lives. (It obviously doesn't apply to all women at that time).
