BBC article has been charged with two counts of rape sad

"Meanwhile, Mr Blades appeared in court in Worcester via videolink alongside his legal team on Tuesday for a preliminary hearing in relation to a separate charge of controlling or coercive behaviour, which he has denied"

I bet the BBC wish they'd have employed an actual heritage craft skilled specialist to front The Repair Shop now - it was such a lovely programme.

He hasn't been found guilty yet but there seems so many men with a questionable nature on television

Victims have anonymity, and this should be applied to the accused too. As posters have said, lives are ruined. Mud sticks, however shiny a surface it is thrown at. A girl accused a fellow student of raping her some years ago, seemingly because he wasn't interested in her. He commited suicide. A work colleague was suspended because of allegations that were proven to be false - that didn't stop his name being bandied about and his children reduced to tears at school. He never returned to his job.

I love The Repair Shop, but must say I never took to Jay B the way I have with virtually all the other craftspeople.

Yes.

As Timothy Evans and his family did

Yes, but when it is one person’s word against another, there is much more chance that it isn’t true. What difference would it make if people in this scenario are granted privacy until the outcome of the trial is known?

Bridie22 Wed 06-Aug-25 08:13:16

Rape is rape whether on your wife or a stranger.

Jane43, being a rapist in plain sight isn't mitigated by charity works, lets not forget the so called charity worker Jimmy Saville.🤬

From what is in the press this is not a scenario anything like Jimmy Savillle though. It sounds as though the charges are brought by his ex wife, not by people he doesn’t know. That is exactly what happened in the Charles Hanson case too. Jay Blades’ wife might be entirely justified, and if so he deserves a prison sentence, but the point to condemn him is when he is found guilty, not when he is charged.

I'm not comfortable with the name of the accused being released once charges have been made just because they're celebrities.

I agree Smileless no-one should be named until they are found guilty,

I think Terry Wogan was irreplaceable on the BBC Radio morning programme.

Agreed!

Thank you Jane43

He has lived in Shropshire for years, is highly regarded and does a lot of community work in the area, it will be sad if this is adversely affected.

“Blades's community work in Shropshire includes:
Promoting practical skills:
He has been vocal about the value of practical skills and encourages young people to explore careers in traditional crafts.
Mentoring and support:
He mentors individuals like Steve, who runs Restored Retro and is one of the UK's stockists for Jay's furniture collection, according to Shropshire Council Newsroom.
Working with young people:
He has been involved in initiatives that encourage young people to engage with practical jobs and has spoken about his own experiences with dyslexia and overcoming challenges.
Speaking at events:
He has spoken at events like the Shropshire jobs fair, sharing his inspirational story and encouraging others to pursue their goals.
Social enterprise:
His social enterprise, Jay & Co, is based in Wolverhampton and focuses on supporting disadvantaged and disengaged groups.”

I'm beginning to think that the BBC seems to be a similar cesspool to Hollywood. What is going on with the men in these places?

welbeck Tue 05-Aug-25 22:56:22

This matter is sub judice.

ixion Tue 05-Aug-25 22:44:07

And kept his ruddy hat on throughout.

Allira Tue 05-Aug-25 22:30:13

It wasn't clear, 25Avalon, but yes, I see what you mean now. He was rather touchy-feely, patting Charles's arm as if they were best mates.

25Avalon Tue 05-Aug-25 22:25:58

Allira

25Avalon

And he was all over his mate King Charles - not so humble. He had it all and has chucked it. What a fool.

King Charles was his mate

I hardly think so. Blades presented a popular restoration programme.
Charles supports many restoration projects - check out Dumfries House.

I think I’ve been misunderstood. I was not criticising King Charles but Jay Blades who was over familiar and treated Charles like his mate. Years ago he would have been put in the Tower for such behaviour. As it was King Charles was very forbearing and took it in good part.

Skydancer

It’s unfair to name anyone in a case like this until proven guilty.

No, at the point of charging I think people should be named - as other people gain courage then and come forward.

It isn't just celebrities.

Babs03 Tue 05-Aug-25 21:41:50

I liked him on the repair shop and really warmed to him when he did a programme about illiteracy. I understand is his wife making accusations though others may have come forward too.
What a shame. If he is guilty he deserves whatever he has coming. If innocent it will be hard to live down.

JaneJudge Tue 05-Aug-25 21:01:43

We need to all be mindful of domestic violence whether he is convicted or not. His ex wife seems clear in this

Casdon Tue 05-Aug-25 20:29:33

eddiecat78

I'd like to point out that the auctioneer Charles Hanson (Bargain Hunt etc) was accused of some awful things by his wife and his career was completely scuppered. A court case then found that he was entirely innocent and his wife was a very nasty woman.
We don't yet know the full story about Jay Blades

Yes, I remember that too, the poor man has had his reputation destroyed, as although his acquittal was covered on the news it was much less of a big story than his arrest. I’m always cautious when it comes to condemning somebody on the basis of just their arrest, and that case really proved that is the right way to think.

Smileless2012 Tue 05-Aug-25 20:01:42

And some men do too.
