He seems to have been in my life since I was a teenager. Loved him in Big Deal and in Mr Benn.

RIP

Oh yes and Cathy Come Home.

RIP Ray

Indeed, kate and was there a play for today about someone in an iron lung after they had polio?

I do remember him from Cathy Come Home. Sometimes for nostalgic puposes, I'll get up a 60s film on Amazon Prime, for the fashions and the mood of the time. The films are generally ridiculous and incredibly sexist, but if you have a desire to see Ray Brooks, they had The Knack, in which he had a leading role. A typical mid Swinging '60s film, very preposterous in the way so many, edgy and of theit time were. He was very good looking back then

I remember him from Cathy Come Home but never realised he was the voice of Mr Benn.

He was in Dr Who with Andrew Keir, Peter Cushing and Bernard Cribbens. And a sit com as well

I don't remember the play kitty but he certainly was in a lot of things. I didn't know he was the voice of Mr Benn either until I read it yesterday.

Some of Cathy Come Home was filmed in the street next to where I grew up.

I liked Big Deal with Sharon Duce.

I thought highly of his acting, Cathy Come Home will always stand out.
I also particularly remember Big Deal, he worked well with Sharon Duce. You could believe that they were really a couple.

RIP Ray. He was in my life forever! Plus our ice cream man looked like him back in the late 1970s

I loved Big Deal too, I never understood why it only ran for three series.

Always enjoyed watching Ray Brooks from the very first time I saw him in Cathy Come Home until his character saw off Pauline Fowler in ‘Enders. Hard to believe he was 86, where does the time go.
Currently enjoying watching Big Deal on YouTube. Still as good now as it was then.

Mojack26 Tue 12-Aug-25 20:42:11

Never heard of him,sorry

Was it necessary to comment in that case?

Oh yes and Cathy Come Home.

RIP Ray

"Cathy Come Home" was harrowing at the end when the social workers snatched the children away.

And Ray Brooks had a marvellous voice.

Hey love, it's a free country. Just about.

kittylester Tue 12-Aug-25 22:29:52

Please don't call me love. Patronising.

He was also in Play It Cool, which I saw on TV years ago but never forgot because it was so endearingly silly. A group of wild young teens lose their motorcycle licences and turn their energy towards the Duke of Edinburgh's Award!

I always thought Ray Brooks was cute, though.

I really remember Ray Brooks as a young teenager in the Sixties.

He was really mooted as one of the new up and coming actors of that decade. And rightly so

Very confident, smooth style and good voice.

Thanks for the memory Ray

RIP
