In need of something not too demanding (Covid brain) I turned to the first episode of this last night. Oh did I say I’ve always had a bit of a thing for James Norton?
I gave up after 20 minutes of banal dialogue, much shouting, “Father!” , “Harold!” “Sweyn!” ( had to look that one up) and “William!” - no not a rerun the Wales v Sussex bunfight but with muddier faces.
Might as well have been.
Underwhelmed.

Oh dear, this is on DH’s want to watch list best make sure I have a good book to read.

We missed it last night but I said we could find it on iPlayer.
Perhaps not, if there are inaccuracies there will be a running commentary from DH too!

We have a shelf full of history books - all apart from 1066 And All That.
Must see if I can find a copy!

Oh, I missed this thread (hot here on the beach today 🥵), and posted on the Bayeux thread this morning.
I enjoy anything to do with that battle at the moment, DGD has just done it in History at school, so I'm trying to sound knowledgeable. It was a bit bloody for me, and sombre. The girl who plays Mathilde (??) fascinates me. She acts the same in every drama, but is realistic too.

Clémence Poésy, that's it.

I was also looking forward to this, but was hugely disappointed. I kept having to turn the volume up, as the characters seemed to talk more quietly with each scene. It felt as if I was getting progressively more deaf throughout the programme.

Totally befuddled by it - not helped by the gloom and the mumbling
(Incidentally, recently watched a Miss Marple from the 1980s - brightly lit and dialogue as clear as a bell)

I also watched Miss Marple on Saturday night.

Dear Joan Hickson.

I just have to listen to that chirpy tune and see the opening credits characters to know that all’s right with the world for the next couple of hours, even if murder is afoot.

(Sorry to digress from King and Conqueror).

Glad it isn’t just me that couldn’t work out what was going on.

There's an excellent podcast series on BBC Sounds called The Rest is History. There were 3 or 4 episodes fairly recently about the build up to and the actual Norman Invasion which really helped me to understand more about the events surrounding the Battle of Hastings. We haven't watched last lifts episode yet but will wait and watch a few together if it improves.

7th April. The Shadows of War. Thanks. I’ll listen to those 4 episodes tonight. I was worried that they would be subscribers only because every time I spot one that I really want to listen to it turns out to be subscribers only. It’s as if they can read my mind through the internet!

MayBee70 Mon 25-Aug-25 19:25:06

Oh, it’s on utube too!

Allira Mon 25-Aug-25 20:15:11

Just mentioned it to DH and have had a very lengthy explanation about who was who, who was Regnum, step-son of whom, son, brother etc of whom, who was where (someone was in Denmark apparently) etc etc.

But please don't ask me to explain. 😧

It would have been much easier to follow if they had followed the Bayeux Tapestry, which has all the Normans clean-shaven and gives all the Saxons moustaches.

Allira Mon 25-Aug-25 20:28:29

grumppa 😁

No point in getting my copy out of the 'Interesting Places Visited' file and spreading it around the sitting room, then!

GrauntyHelen Mon 25-Aug-25 20:46:33

I gave it 5 minutes

Ordinarily I would but I just kept hoping against hope that something was going to happen.
And I love looking at James Norton 🥰 but not enough to go through that again. BBC you have disappointed an awful lot of people 😥

Allira Mon 25-Aug-25 21:14:13

If we do watch it, I'm not going to ask DH any questions .....

Has Harold been shot with the arrow yet?

I have that! We still talk about whether or not somebody was a GT (Good Thing)

Excellent podcast, I agree, the episodes about the Norman Invasion were perfect.

Was William I a Good Thing or Evil?

He was certainly very organised He'd make a very keen Chancellor of the Exchequer.

escaped Mon 25-Aug-25 21:30:01

The Normans think he was. He put Normandy on the map and made it prosper.

MayBee70 Mon 25-Aug-25 21:38:14

One of my favourite history series from a few years back was The Normans. William was descended from Rollo wasn’t he?

I think so, yes.

I gave up after 15 minutes. So boring. James Norton was so badly cast. He’s so much better as a vicar 😂

He wasn't their last Rollo was he? (I'll get me coat)

I watched the first episode last night. Stuck it out but could not make head nor tail of it! So confusing, dark and a waste of my time. Needless to say I gave it a miss this evening.
