Went to see The Roses, with Olivia Coleman & Benedict Cumberbatch, last night.

Great film & great to escape from the real world for a short while.

Has anyone else seen it & if so what did you think?

Many thanks clawdy. I clearly wasn’t concentrating. 👍

SPOILER:
He had smashed the oven top. Moments later they are lying down together and realising they still love each other. There's a quick shot of the smashed top and gas escaping, then he says some thing like " Let's play music and light the fire..." Then the screen goes blank, so it's obviously the end for both of them.

I have to admit I can’t remember the last bit of the film, other than them chasing after each other in an aggressive way. Can someone please just give a quick run down of the end marking it SPOILER. Thanks.

PS I do remember him pushing the pen in her arm to save her.

I thought it was fun. A classy farce. Yes, zero chemistry between the two, but in a farce that's a good thing. The ending was revealed in a review I heard, but that didn't matter to me. Wouldn't have occurred to me to be upset by the language.

Benedict Cumberbatch and Olivia Colman made that film. They didn't get on with each off screen so that might have helped make the confrontation scenes so believable. I think Benedict must run in real life. My friends and I 9all over 70) noticed his very well developed leg and thigh muscles. Now,now! grin

I went to see The Roses with several family members, ranging in age from 75 to 15, and everyone enjoyed it. It wasn't as dark and bitter as The War of the Roses, which is one of my favourite films, but it was very entertaining. Both leads were very good and, to be honest, I couldn't care less about the swearing.

I enjoyed it enormously, I liked the black comedy ending and isn’t it great to see a film where the woman is actually older than her other half?!!

Sounds like your war might have been funnier than what we watched. Hope your things are dry, your leg is better and peace reigns.

Haven't seen it but on reading the comments from Grans about the swearing, it made me wonder why the c word seems to be about the worst swear word possible and why is the worse possible word to say a word for women's most intimate and private body part that can never be part of the male anatomy? I can't think of a word that is thought of as equally as bad that pertains to men's body parts. I think we should reclaim the word. I feel offended, not by the word itself, but by the fact that it is another word for women's vulvas and vaginas and angry that they have been turned into a word that everyone hates.

I enjoyed it and very much liked the 2 main actors but as many said not as good as War of the Roses

Etoile2701 Thu 11-Sept-25 17:41:10

I loved it but was a bit confused by the ending.

BlueSapphire Thu 11-Sept-25 17:32:16

Well, I liked it and so did the friend I went with; the swearing didn't bother us, we both thought it was funny, won't spoil the ending...

ClaraB Thu 11-Sept-25 17:01:09

We saw it last week, not as good as I’d hoped and I’m not a fan of the C word either

Geordiegirl1 Thu 11-Sept-25 16:55:09

I’m pretty much sick of Olivia. Good luck to her but she’s never off the screen. Not her fault but the people who hire need to extend their scope!!

Anneeba Thu 11-Sept-25 15:32:15

I loved it as did my husband. I thought the script was very funny and spot on for each character. I enjoyed the acting too.

Grandmotherto8 Thu 11-Sept-25 14:14:15

I saw it last week. I enjoyed the majority of the film but was disappointed in the finale - not a patch on War of the Roses.

NannaFirework Thu 11-Sept-25 13:46:34

We went yesterday ; I thought they were a very unlikely couple…
Unusual in that there weren’t any sex scenes - but quite refreshing in that sense, lol!
I was shocked at the end…

Samsara1

We went yesterday evening. I don't think we enjoyed it much as we had just had a blazing row and during the showing I got a horrible cramp in my leg and back pain as the seats are terrible and Dh in an attempt to massage my leg threw his Zero Guinness all over my new jeans and white linen shirt. -- They are all on the line this morning. Washing machine going since dawn. I am still mad.

Samsara1, I didn't see the film, but I'd love to have seen the antics of you and your O.H especially when the Guinness landed..

dotpocka Thu 11-Sept-25 13:30:06

war of the roses was great and it was not a nice
dark but so funny
so i will watch

merlotgran Thu 11-Sept-25 13:24:10

Just got back from the cinema… The constant swearing spoilt it for me. Not much real wit or humour just one banal, foul mouthed insult after the other.

I’m no prude but it’s not what I’d call entertainment.

Homestead62 Thu 11-Sept-25 03:31:46

I am not really a Benedict Cumberbatch fan, enjoyed Sherlock and to give credit where it's due he was superb in Eric. Did not fancy The Roses, will probably watch on TV.

Cressy Wed 10-Sept-25 18:51:27

I thought it was very ‘lovey’ and overacted. 😬

I agree with SORES

I thought they were an unlikely couple. Some very humorous scenes, but I didn’t think it hung together very well.

Couldn’t agree more!

I was very disappointed as had been looking forward to it, and as NanKate said the language was terrible!
Quite used to the F word which is used profusely these days,
But some others were really cringeworthy!

Clawdy Wed 10-Sept-25 08:42:49

There was an interview in the Guardian with Olivia and Benedict, and what came across was what great friends they are, lots of joking and laughter.

SORES Tue 09-Sept-25 18:52:45

Sarnia there is nothing like a bit of manifactured thespian strife to pique the viewers vicarious interest ha ha
-You may really enjoy it though and will come back with your review
