The Australian one was even better and the last episode had me in tears

It was incredibly moving, wasn’t it.

In another recent thread the subject of empathy was discussed. Someone suggested it was claptrap.

This trial, the verdict, and what followed very definitely evoked empathy from me.

I watched the final episode yesterday. It was a very complex trial and I am glad I am now too old to be asked to be a juror. The accused was really put through the mill. The reasons that the jury came up with for arriving at their verdicts was quite frightening in some cases. The woman who couldn't stop laughing really annoyed me.

I m glad too that I ll never have to do jury duty, I really think it’s a very fault ridden way to make these life changing decisions I believe in some parts of Europe they have a paid jury that actually has some basic training in law
The way we do it can involve people who may be completely ignorant of even normal life with all its many foibles let alone complex psychological reactions

I think the whole point is that you are tried by your peers, not an intellectual elite or a professional or trained person with legal experience.

The jury seemed like a good cross section to me with clear views and opinions. However, I am a little cynical about how the jury is selected by the TV companies, as these people are not in a real life courtroom setting and so are conscious they are being filmed. I think there is some playing up to the cameras kind of behaviour takes place.

I've just started watching it, second or third episode and it's the difference between Australian and British juries that interests me. In England jurors don't go into the deliberation room until the end of all the evidence, they can discuss things if no-one else is there and all 12 are in the discussion. The Australians seem to be speculating on events from the start. The English juries also can't take their notes etc from the court. Like the trial I was on the jury for a lot of people have drawn inferences from the nature of the crime and some have decided before hearing the evidence.
