Went to see the final Downton film today.
We enjoyed it, usual Downton formula and a good ending. Feel a bit sad that it's all over ?

Thanks, Maw. I guessed Peter was Edith’s son but thought it was a shame there were so few mentions/appearances of the children.
In the scene where Noel Coward performs there seemed to be loads of them watching from the gallery but as it was a blink and you’ll miss it scene I could be wrong. Anna and Bates’s son was probably up there as well.

I found some of the references to the children confusing. Who is Peter that Edith was keen to go home to? When did Mary have a girl and who with?
I will definitely watch it again when it appears on TV so I can pause and rewind bits. I went to the cinema with DD and we were both wishing we could say out loud, ‘Who’s that again?’ 😂

I enjoyed it but agree with a lot of Maw’s comments.

Peter is presumably Edith and Bertie’s son.
Mary has a daughter with Henry (Caroline?)
These must be in one or both of the feature films but as I can’t really remember them, I’m not sure which.
My recollection is however that they were both better than The Grand Finale.

We enjoyed it but did miss the humour between Maggie Smith’s character and Penelope Wilton’s.
RIP Maggie Smith.

My one criticism about this last film which was bringing everything together is.......

"Why no mention of Aunt Rosamund" ?

She was a big part of the family from the beginning, no one mentioned her at all and yet the silly Uncle from America got shipped over to take up far too much screen time.

I saw the film yesterday with a friend, it is a good thing it has come to an end. I found the various house sales and purchases a bit confusing. They were selling Downton House which from memory was in a different part of the country, Robert and Cora were moving into the Dower House and Mary would be living in Downton Abbey. Then there was the possible purchase of a flat in London presumably for the use of the family. Have I got this right?

We saw Sybie as a teenager, likewise “Master George”, and assorted other children playing Rounders with their nanny.
And it’s “Donk”.

Somewhat late to the party I saw The Grand Finale this morning and was glad I only spent (wasted?) £5 on a Silver Screen ticket.
I’ve just finished binge- watching my way through the entire series as a warm up and was shocked at how the actors seem to have aged- “Tom Brandon” and “Barrow” a lot heavier, “Cora” (Elizabeth McGovern still simpering, quite gaunt and haggard.
The script was heavy handed, cumbersome, as subtle as a brick with all the topical “references” - yes, we’d twigged it was 1930 or whatever, and totally obsessed with the theme of retirement/all change/ the decline of the grand houses/gay references ( I think if you didn’t know about Noel Coward you must have spent the last 100 years incommunicado in an Amazonian jungle) and of course divorce presaged by references to the Prince of Wales..
As I said, subtle as a brick.
And the acting - much of which came across as a parody of the characters we have come to know…perhaps what was originally designed for the small screen did not translate to the wider one, but it was frequently ponderous and affected.
Edith and Bertie just about got away with it and the dresses were simply gorgeous, but other than that it was definitely a nail in the Downton Abbey coffin.
With luck, Julian Fellowes will recognise that the time to stop flogging that dead horse was long overdue.

Saw it today. Thoroughly enjoyed it 🙂

The film was easy to follow with new story lines. Newcomers to the series will easily slot in. Enjoy 👍

I’ve never watched Downton on television but I’ve been offered a freebie to see the film.

Do you think I’ll be able to know who people are and what’s going on? Will the film stand alone? Or will I spend all my time totally confused?

Would appreciate some guidance before I commit😬

Well worth watching the whole series from the beginning lathyrus3

Dont think I can fit it in before the film🤣

Shall I take my knitting……..

I think you need to see it from the beginning to get into all the characters.
I went with mum the other night, fab film.

To be fair I have watched the series but not the film so I may be wrong.

To be honest I would have thought that might be tricky Lathyrus.

Fabulous film.

Loved the clothes especially.

Went to see it with my two daughters we all really enjoyed it. We’ve decided to binge watch the whole series again plus the 3 films. There was also a short documentary on television this week with some of the cast all talking about the whole experience for them . It was strange seeing them all in their own clothes, they looked so different

keepingquiet Sat 20-Sept-25 16:05:06

I loved Downton- I could never understand why but it was a great cast with excellent scripts and storylines.

So yes, I'm looking forward to seeing the film but doubt it is the end, except if all the cast get killed off...

No spoilers please though!

I intend to visit Highclere in the next six months, it will feel like visiting relatives 😄

Parsley3 Sat 20-Sept-25 15:38:06

I saw it last week and Downton fans won't be disappointed. My friend and I both wiped away a tear at the ending.

Oreo Sat 20-Sept-25 15:01:44

Looking forward to seeing it, I love all things Downton, the series was especially marvellous, time to get to know all the characters.

DamaskRose Sat 20-Sept-25 14:58:31

Went with DGD, her friend and friend’s Mum and we all cried at the end! In a good way!
