First of all, I like Nicola Walker and enjoyed Unforgotten and other dramas she’s been in but Annika not so much.
This was very light drama. The crimes were almost incidental to Annika’s bumbling around in her personal life. They are resolved with last minute light bulb moments that makes Midsomer look serious.
Any jeopardy is resolved in 30 seconds. The car exploding when Annika was locked in the boot. The boat explosion when Michael was locked inside. Morgan locked in with the fake driving instructor.
The first series was ok but the second felt laboured.
Morgan now knows who her father is and everyone seems fine with it. Jake moves in to the boat house. We assume Blair had her baby. Sprinter Tyrone gets a promotion and is replaced by leather biker chick Harper. Everybody is super cool and efficent but there’s little attempt to develop any of their characters. Police procedure is virtually non existent. Nobody is ever read their rights. No PACE clock ticks.
I think it had run its course. Was it even a cliffhanger? Annika seemed to have no love for her father. She’d have him extradited and charged and that would be the end of it. Another classic tale from literature.
I’m inclined to agree with the The Telegraph which described the series as "disappointingly pedestrian", recommending that "The show needs to focus less on the clever conceits and more on the plots”.
Sewing on Girl Guide badges, aaargh!!
