Have started watching Series 9 of Shetland. Is it getting soapy?

Thanks for the tip re jumper.

I'm so enjoying these replies, thank you all so much! Thought the jumper might be from from Seasalt.

ps Back to the series: How many Senior Officers behind the desk have they had in Shetland? Enormous turnover if I'm right.

Tosh’s nice jumper, if we are thinking of the same one, was this from Seasalt the colour is called Spruce Frost (with Cyclamen).

But not in the Terry Wogan sense alas!

I think it’s a bit Janet and John

Ruth’s trousers are very fashionable.
Didn’t Tosh’s partner reappear last week? Perhaps the child ( was a baby when it disappeared) will turn up soon.

It is a nice jumper

I think it's verging on parody. The music altering if something bad is about to happen. Billy should have been left behind in the station.
Where on earth is Tosh's child?
Why does Ruth wear her trews half mast and where did Tosh source that nice jumper?

I watch mainly to enjoy the landscape and to see if I can recognise the locations, even though I've only been there once.

I was late coming to the Shetland series but thoroughly enjoyed the early ones with Jimmy Perez when I finally watched them. For some reason the only later episode I started to watch did not grip me and now I am not bothering with them. Maybe some time in the future I will give them another go.

I like the two women and think they work well together. I never noticed lipstick! The current story is intriguing. I must say that the setting really makes me not want to visit Shetland. I find the landscapes so depressing.

After Jimmy Perez's departure from Shetland, I feared the 'two women detectives' pairing might not work, but was gripped by Tosh and Calder in Series 8, who were absolutely believable in this dark story, with not a whiff of Cagney and Lacy about them.
Then I started watching Series 9. My heart sank when I saw both women were wearing lipstick! The dark, gritty, sometimes threatening quality of Shetland seems to have been diluted to a more highly lit show with soapier content. They seem to be developing the excellent Sandy and Billy characters into more individual 'personalities' rather than letting them stay members of a great team, which is the real heart of the stories. IMHO the programme has been weakened overall.

Would be interested in what other fans of Shetland think of the current series.
