Have started watching Series 9 of Shetland. Is it getting soapy?

After Jimmy Perez's departure from Shetland, I feared the 'two women detectives' pairing might not work, but was gripped by Tosh and Calder in Series 8, who were absolutely believable in this dark story, with not a whiff of Cagney and Lacy about them.
Then I started watching Series 9. My heart sank when I saw both women were wearing lipstick! The dark, gritty, sometimes threatening quality of Shetland seems to have been diluted to a more highly lit show with soapier content. They seem to be developing the excellent Sandy and Billy characters into more individual 'personalities' rather than letting them stay members of a great team, which is the real heart of the stories. IMHO the programme has been weakened overall.

Would be interested in what other fans of Shetland think of the current series.

There's a post on Instagram or YouTube (sorry can't remember which and can't find it now) where some of the cast of Shetland try to guess the meaning of Shetland dialect words. Only "Sandy" played by Steven Robertson is a true Shetlander and he set the questions. Nobody scored well 🤣🤣

Does anybody else like me, not have a scooby what is going on?
Or am I just distracted by the plethora of lovely jumpers!

I have - not for the first time - totally lost the plot.

Whatever happened, it wasn't Stevie who dunnit.
At least, we don't think so.

But then, I'm not really sure what was done anyway.

It’s ok but I wish Ruth would do something about her unruly hair. Though I suppose there’s not much point in windy Shetland.

I used to like it, but haven't watched this series at all.

Why was Hayley so sure he was dead?

Didn’t she find a pulse?

I thought she phoned her husband while he was in the police car and said "he's dead"? I could be wrong, it was a strange twist in the story. The best bit was when their daughter stood in the living room holding a packet of drugs.

Yes, Hayley becoming a drug dealer and almost killer in a few weeks was so unlikely.

I like Ruths outfits, not sure how she affords her high end wardrobe on a police salary.

It is getting increasingly stupid.

This is the first series I have watched and I thought this week's episode was very far fetched, almost farcical, particularly the bloke who got hit over the head with a rock and apparently got up and walked away.

I've always watched it for the scenery though I never liked Douglas Henshall or his character.
Much prefer the current cast but this storyline is a bit dull.

I cant believe Tosh would wear a Seasalt jumper when Shetland is awash with shops selling gorgeous handknits.

Well, I thought the same!

She needs to go on Game of Wool 😁

I was losing interest in Shetland after the departure of Dougie Henshall but this new story hooked me like a fish !! What a story !
I quite like the 2 girls together now .

Definitely soapy.
Everyone in the small community seems to have form of some sort or other, and the husband who insists on accompanying his wife to protect her and her nefarious dealings happily leaves their seven/ eight year old child alone, 'because she never wakes up.' Really??

Clawdy Mon 17-Nov-25 08:34:11

Yes, it's just not the same, but I'm still watching.

Allsorts Mon 17-Nov-25 05:15:08

I agree with you Calender Girl, Tosh has a look that seems sneering and her face to me seems as if permanently puzzled.
I watch it but it’s not a patch as when Perez was in it.

Aveline Sun 16-Nov-25 09:33:27

Me too. He'd not get away with it these days.

LadyGracie Sun 16-Nov-25 08:11:12

Definitely not Janet and John in the Terry Wogan sense, I still listen to these occasionally and they still make me giggle.

Calendargirl Sun 16-Nov-25 07:23:42

Tosh always looks to be sneering to me.

Her top lip turns up at one corner whenever she speaks.

I think it's verging on parody. The music altering if something bad is about to happen. Billy should have been left behind in the station.
Where on earth is Tosh's child?
Why does Ruth wear her trews half mast and where did Tosh source that nice jumper?

I liked Billy in his place at the station.
I'd like to see more of Sandy (the only authentic accent, I think)
Tosh's child spends a lot of time asleep
Too short trousers have 'divorced your ankles and married your knees', according to DH
Must check up on the jumper.

Just checked on the jumper, 37% recycled nylon! Add in the elastane and it's a no from me. £80 for a 40% manmade fibre jumper..... I'd rather pay another £20 and have a completely natural fibre jumper.

I liked it with Perez, and his daughter's other dad, and has Billy retired or off sick..

I'm so enjoying these replies, thank you all so much! Thought the jumper might be from from Seasalt.

ps Back to the series: How many Senior Officers behind the desk have they had in Shetland? Enormous turnover if I'm right.

Where are all these other police officers hiding in the station? We never see them there.
