Nuremberg the film

I saw this tonight. A good film with Russell Crowe excellent as Herman Goring. I knew nothing of the psychiatrist, Douglas Kelley, sent to assess the mental states of the Nazis awaiting trial.

Kelley’s conclusion was that given the right circumstances, people were capable of behaving as these Nazis on trial had done. My dad said the same to me when I was learning about the holocaust.

A tough watch but scarily reminiscent of today in many ways. At one point Goring describes the first time he heard Hitler speak, when he promised to return Germany to its former glory. Wouldn’t you follow a man like that, promising to return your country to its former strength and pride?

Maga?

Seeing it this week Iam. The 1947 'Nuremberg Trials' was brilliant so am hoping this is as good.

'Judgement at Nuremberg' was on TV last week, another brilliant but difficult watch.

An amazing film, but a very difficult watch. Personally, I think Rami Malek and Russell Crowe deserve Oscars.

It was a difficult but brilliant watch. Haunting and yes Rami Malek and Russell Crowe so convincing in character

I haven't seen this new movie but Judgement at Nuremberg (1961) was powerful. Seeing Nazis getting their karma is always a good watch.

There's also an excellent 4 part BBC series which I recommend.

I'm afraid the answer to that is no. Not until we get more women as leaders to dilute the testosterone fuelled men with too much power in their hands.

Going to see this this afternoon.

Excellent acting by Russell Crow and Rami Malek, but every time I see him I think of Freddy Mercury.

Iam64 Tue 25-Nov-25 17:24:58

I haven’t seen Freddy but my daughter said the same Smiles.

Pantglas2 Tue 25-Nov-25 18:18:20

Wasn’t it marvellous acting Smileless! And you’re right about thinking Freddy Mercury whenever Malek plays anything else!

Smileless2012 Tue 25-Nov-25 22:30:15

Yes it was Pantglas marvellous actin, there should be a couple of Oscar nominations in there; best actor and best supporting actor but who would be nominated for which one.

I wonder if playing such an iconic role like Freddy Mercury can be detrimental hmm.

I can think of women who were comparable to 'testosterone fueled men'.

Thatcher
Indira Ghandi
Golda Meir
Catherine the Great
Wu Zetian
Dowager Empress Cixi,
Christina Fefnandez de Kirchner of Argentina
Sheikh Hasina

Well Willy Brandt didn't fall for it. I'm pretty sure he wasn't the only German who fought the Nazis.

I certainly can see how Hitler got to power - a good orator. If my memory is correct, Margaret Thatcher styled her speaking on him - that is speak quietly so the audience stops talking and listens. I often see comments that they think Nigel Farage is virtually the new Messiah - he has great headlines but no details on his policies. In any event I don't think he has staying power as he would have to half his salary if he became PM.

I quite agree about Farage, he'd have to do some work if he became PM and for less money.

Is that a new film on Nuremberg? I googled it and wasn't quite sure, I liked the previous film on it?

Susieq62 Sun 30-Nov-25 16:26:23

My daughter and I saw it last week and thought it was excellent but very harrowing! It started with name calling, the rest as we know is history !
Definitely should be Oscar nominations!

I thought this was amazing too. It was good to learn how complex it was, how all the different countries had different legal systems and how hard it was to prosecute the Nazi war criminals against that backdrop.
And some of the people who were involved who were household names later on, but I had no idea of the role they played at Nuremberg.
It was also interesting to understand the steps they had to take to stop people committing suicide before they got a trial.

Not so much a gifted orator but I understand he knew how to work a crowd and read a room. Possibly his only talent.

The recent programme on Channel 4 is a truly fascinating watch. Hitler's DNA: Blueprint of a Dictator.

They have managed to pick up all sorts of things from a sample of his blood. What makes it all the more fascinating is that he went to such great pains to have his body destroyed but never realised that a small bloodstain could be analysed 80 years later.
