Is it fantasy?

I'm one who enjoyed the book and also the film which I saw today.I've liked everything Jessie Buckley has done.She is so talented.And despite all the hype -which usually puts me off a film -thought it was very moving and beautifully filmed.

I must watch it.

I believe the young brothers are the sons of the actress who played Julie (Eileen's sister) in Coronation Street.

Oh, I didn't realise they were brothers! I did comment that they looked alike, but assumed that was down to good casting 😀

Yes Blue Sapphire. I found it difficult to make out what was being said at times.

I saw it yesterday, haven’t read the book but thoroughly enjoyed the film - cried buckets!
Jessie Buckly was amazing so were the two brothers playing Hamnet/Hamlet.

I enjoyed the book and looking forward to seeing the film .

Did anyone else who saw the film find the dialogue difficult to follow in some places? Or is it just me?

I even wasted money on buying a copy.
Just because a book is a best seller does not mean it is necessarily good.

No, that's true, but it's perfectly possible for any of us not to appreciate a good book for whatever reason. Just because I don't enjoy tomes such as Les Miserables, for instance, doesn't make them 'poor books' - it's just that I am not a fan of a lot of detailed descriptions and numerous characters.

I didn't enjoy The Marriage Portrait, but most of my book club loved it. I don't think that limited sample means that the book itself is either good or bad though - they are just opinions based on taste for different styles of writing.

Anyway, the film was one of those where total strangers were telling one another how much they'd enjoyed it on the way out😀.

Haven’t read the book. Just seen the film. Found it very depressing tbh. Too intense. The children are great little actors especially Hamnet.
It’s a bit like Normal People - a lot of atmosphere and unspoken emotions.
I’d like to know where this part of Shakespeares life history came from or is it largely poetic licence.

I read the book when it first came out. I wondered how it could be made into a film, Went to see it at the weekend, and it was unrelentingly sad (no surprise really). And yes, Jessie deserves an Oscar but the part she plays has the full range of emotions and physical experiences for her to act.

Adored the book ,re read,& recommend to all and sundry! Strangely for me I am going to see the film. I normally don't want to spoil the book version in my head but as Jessie Buckley is in it I've booked my ticket!

I enjoyed the book, although not her best one IMO, a bit dense and heavy in places but I have booked my tickets to see the film already.

I also didn't enjoy the book. It was beautifully written but possibly over-written? I have read most of her other books and considered The Marriage Portrait her best.

Going with a friend to see the film this evening.

I found the book unreadable - as did most of my bookclub. I've read and enjoyed most of O'Farrell's books so this was a big disappointment. Consequently I probably won't watch the film

I have to wait for the DVD as I can’t get to a cinema. According to Amazon the DVD is due to be released in 2099! I feel this can’t be right.

Apparently the streaming rights are with Amazon Prime and Peacock but it will not be streamed until after its theatre run.

Sometimes certain films are worthy of the big screen, I'm sure this will be one of those.

For some reason or other I never got to see Gladiator at the cinema, and really wished I had.

It will be on Netflix or similar long before then, if you have that, or know someone who does, though.
