For people who'd like more period drama, I've discovered Cranford is available on Channel 4 catch up. I remember watching it decades ago but had forgotten the storylines. Just watching the first episode and it's f a b u l o u s !! So many well-known names in it.

Thanks. I loved it too! I would have assumed it was BBC so wouldn’t have spotted it. From memory is Judi Dench in it?

Yes she is and I also like the actress who played her sister. Well, I think that they were all good in it.

Such gentle drama.

Thanks, never seen it, will watch.

It was my most-hated syllabus book at school, but I think it would appeal now.

It was a wonderful series and some great actors. I must watch it again.

I loved the book too. so gentle, and poignant..I discovered Elizabeth Gaskell at uni . But...I iirc I didn't like it then, as much as I do now.

Loved Cranford! Watched a few episodes, still love it. but I keep forgetting it's on. Watching The Waltons and Little House on the Prairie on Great TV also Bramwell. Made much better programmes back then. Now it's mostly all game, reality shows and soaps!

I never saw it when it was on originally but repeats have been on U&Drama a few times and I agree it is a brilliant series.

Thanks for bringing this to our attention! I loved that when it was on originally and look forward to watching it on Ch.4. On a related note, I have watched most of Lark Rise to Candleford which is on U. Loved that series.

I watched the first episode last night and it was delightful. Such an amazing cast and wonderful writing. Quietly amusing too. I’ll try and eak out the five episodes and almost wish we were back to the days where we had to wait a week to watch something.

Some programmes do make us wait for each episode without releasing the whole series straight away. But I, too, miss the thrill and anticipation of waiting for the next episode of something.

That’s good news, the last time I looked it was a pay for series on Prime I think. I will be able to rewatch it now.

I wanted to watch it so much I just paid on Prime: I told myself that it cost less than a coffee and a cake for the whole of series 1! And no advertisements of course.

Loving it. How I laughed at the cat incident (I wont do a spoiler) and the very end, hankie out in a nice way.

Prime have Lark Rise to Candleford too, and a clutch of similar series on Prime. So looking forward to more. They've spotted the market opportunity...
