Did anyone else see this tonight on Channel 5? What superb acting!

Whatever our thoughts about the actual programme, if nothing else it will hopefully put an end to that deluded man’s belief that he could ever stage a ‘comeback’ - the arrogance of it!

Where did this information regarding a 'comeback' originate?

It seems so unlikely that anyone / company / organisation would want to be associated with him that it's hard to find this credible!

No and I don't intend watching it. They couldn't have picked a more unsuitable person to play the scumbag. I really like Martin Clunes, but honestly! There must have been hundreds of good actors that look more like the paedo. I never liked Huw Edwards, he left me cold. I found him sullen and unfriendly and I don't understand how he came to be in such a high position in his career. As a side note, my daughter was a BBC journalist for over 20 years and she said he wasn't nice, and he was disgusting in his treatment of her, in that he went and stood by her desk, farted and walked off, leaving a foul odour behind. UGH!!! (She didn't actually work for him by the way).

I had to turn it off, found it very uncomfortable viewing

Cba to watch a sordid programme like that, I watched two more episodes of Schitt’s Creek, much more entertaining!!

Only 2 😂 Would you believe we have watched the whole series 4 times. Absolutely love it.
If this is the first time you’ve watched the series wait until you see David singing Simply The Best 🥰

This is a fabulous series, fairly new to me, I’m on series 3, and just love it, shall look forward to David sing, he’s just got himself a business partner……. so so good!

Robin202 Wed 25-Mar-26 14:06:35

I started to watch it but found it uncomfortable particularly when ‘Edwards’ was doing something gross in front of his computer screen. It all turned my stomach, the subject and Clune’s portrayal so I switched over.

Pigma Wed 25-Mar-26 14:07:54

Dickens
Several reports in the press over recent months have said that he was hoping to make a comeback, including hiring a representative to assist with this. I read that he had had new promotional photographs taken although these were later removed from social media.

I’m a bit on the line here, not about the abuse but the programme itself, I watched it but I didn’t find it comfortable viewing because I m not sure how I feel about it being made into ‘entertainment’ while his 5 children are still out there having to endure the results of his behaviour and media attention It felt voyeuristic.
Why was he not criminally convicted, two police forces Met and Welsh didn’t criminally charge him. I don’t understand why they didn’t or have I got that wrong
He certainly came across as a throughly dislikable, power abuser and sexual predator , but only one side was shown
This post is not meant to support him in any way what so ever I m just not sure it should have been made
Yes Martin Clunes played the part well, if that is how Huw Edwards really is I suppose it felt unbalanced to me.

Please don’t think I m defending him I m not. It’s the programme itself I felt uncomfortable with

I agree BlueBelle. Too many awful events have been turned into dramas for us to watch from the comfort of our sofas. I can't help feeling that they trivialise events in some way.

I watched it and thought it was superbly well done, Martin Clunes as always was brilliant, as to whether it should have been made that is another question altogether. The reason that it would affect his children is invalid though, he never gave any thought to the effect on his children should he be discovered did he?

Also as to whether it appeared unbalanced this could be that it was Ryan's story, his abuse was never really covered in the court case and that is possibly why Ryan felt that it was time to get his side of the story in the public eye.

It's not fantasy, it is well-researched.

It is uncomfortable and I'm not sure about this becoming entertainment, if that is how people look on it, but I think it sends out an important message.
Paedophiles are not just creepy, nasty people, living in the shadows, preying on children. They can be your respectable family man, the teacher, the politician, the respected newsreader with gravitas bringing the most important news into our homes.

Luckygirl3 Wed 25-Mar-26 14:24:38

I could not bear more than about 19 minutes of Schitts Creek .. so mind-numbing. Dreadful series ....

Good points, missdeke

I think that it was well-researched too Allira .. it all rang true.

What has it got to do with this anyway? Designed to derail the thread for some reason?

I felt queasy watching this and thought this drama was aired much too soon

Luckygirl3 Wed 25-Mar-26 14:53:23

I have been reading some of the reviews in the papers and was amazed that some criticised the acting, which I thought was impeccable, aside from whether it should have been made or made now

icanhandthemback Wed 25-Mar-26 14:54:00

I thought it was excellent and if it stops one person being abused by these so called celebrities, I am more than content. I was abused by an older male relative when I was 13. Much of what I felt with the pressure of not outing that person because of the damage done to our family and the worry that I had brought it on myself is something a lot of abused children feel. I didn't realise that other abused children felt like this, that it was part of the grooming process, etc and these programmes have helped me come to terms with that side of things.
Of course I empathise with Huw Edward's family but they should have no shame. They are innocent victims too. Sadly, I speak as someone who found out that my father was a paedophile when he was in his 80's and it makes me really angry that we are not allowed to out him as such because of a court order. The judge said it was to protect his victim and because he was a first time offender. No, he wasn't, we only found out afterwards that other family members had suffered abuse at his hands too. It is this silence that helps the abuse to carry on.

BlueBelle Wed 25-Mar-26 15:00:54

Bea that’s my point much, much too soon I don’t think it’s justified to make this just over a year after it all came out he has five children so maybe grandchildren who will be possible school age Can you imagine the stick they could get !!!
I m not saying it shouldn’t br produced just that it’s far too soon to be making such a programme

Wyllow I was thinking of Huw Edwards family not the victims families I’m sure the lads family would want it aired

I m not saying it shouldn’t be aired I just think the timing was all wrong There have been programmes about Saville but he was already dead, there was one about Gary Glitter but as far as I know he didn’t have a wife and children (maybe he has) but it was made many years after his conviction If this had been made in five years time I may not have felt so uneasy

albertina Wed 25-Mar-26 15:11:27

I haven't watched it yet but will soon.

I am astounded by his arrogance in saying he wants to put his side of the story forward. Really ?

Oddly I have experienced this sort of paedophile arrogance before. Several years ago I attended Sunday night meditation sessions run by a charming man we all adored and listened to. Suddenly he went missing from the class and when he returned he had lost a lot of weight and looked terrible. We discovered that he had been arrested for the sexual abuse of the 13 year old son of a friend of his.

Long story short, he showed the same arrogance as HE when a local Buddhist monk arranged a meeting so we could all listen to "his side of the story" What followed was two solid hours of self pity and attempts to justify his actions. It was sickening. Like HE he was given a non custodial sentence. We were all disgusted.

Luckygirl3 Wed 25-Mar-26 15:17:21

I agree - it is about flagging up the insidious nature of this sort of grooming. If just one person sees this play and is alerted to what is happening then that has to be good.

Clunes was interviewed this morning and was asked whether it was too soon and he asked what is the right timescale for this? - and felt that any time was right to alert people about it. He said his task was to inhabit the script and do his job as an actor. He also pointed out that HE had in the past been "outing" celebrity abusers in his job.

Anniebach Wed 25-Mar-26 15:27:36

Huw Edwards read the news, did Martin Clunes say when did HE take part in the outing of anyone?

So this is " entertainment". Really , what have we become?

Luckygirl3 Wed 25-Mar-26 15:58:13

That scene was discreet and about 2 seconds. I do not think the whole performance should be judged on that.

4allweknow Wed 25-Mar-26 16:02:49

Martin Clunes was excellent. Did the programme very stressful to watch.
