Old soaps you remembered and like

OK, I've seen numerous soaps come and go over my lifetime, but always wonder which ones Gransnetters watched and enjoyed over the years that are no longer with us.
My guiltiest pleasure has to be The Young Doctors, which became a cult thing when I was at school over 40 years ago. Think of General Hospital made in Aus in the seventies with even cheaper sets and some real ham acting, corny plots and a killer theme tune. I do recall one episode where a Rod Stewart lookalike( well sort of) came into hospital for treatement and behaved like a big head. Eventually he came good and gave the nurses free tickets to his concert. Cue, a couple of flashing spotlights, fake applause and cheering and some bad singing.
More seriously, I was a big fan of Angels, the BBC soap about yoing nurses that covered subjects like alcoholism, adultery and racism( 7pm as well back in the day). I can recall one episode where a Chinese nurse was mocked for being a virgin and, of course, loads of laughter from a group of 14 year olds who were watching Angels.
So what were your guilty soap and not so guilty soap pleasures back in the day?

sodapop Yes a magazine. It's a bit vague. I thought David Hunter was Crossroads. Memory not what it was.

Monarch of the Glen, Howard's Way and Born and Bred.

A couple of years ago we found H's W on one of the repeat channels, and watched all of the series right through. We thoroughly enjoyed it!

My mother and I loved Compact set in the office of a women’s magazine, also Triangle set on a North Sea passenger ferry.

Until I started reading I thought you meant soaps you washed with.

Knights Castile and Camay anyone! 😂

My Mum loved Crossroads and we always watched it every evening. I think I had a bit of a school girl crush on Sandy!
She also listened to Waggoner's Walk on the radio at tea time. I can't remember who, what or where it involved but clearly remember the theme tune!

I loved Waggoner's Walk, I was a young mother in the 70s when it was on and it takes back to those happy days,I would listen to it while I was making my tea for my two toddlers and before putting them to bed.Happy memories.
Angels was on when I was a student nurse in the 60s, there was always a group us watching it in the television room in the nurses' home.

I don’t think it can have been Angels you watched in the 60s as it was first aired in 1975.
I left school in 1976 and briefly thought about taking up nursing because of Angels- my husband laughs when I say this as I am quite squeamish!

I loved Brookside and never missed an episode. There was a "police" soap I loved, The Bill. Again rarely missed an episode.

Sodapop and Kate49, you’re both right. Ronald Allen played David Hunter in Crossroads and he also played a part in The
Newcomers.
I think he also had a role in the soap about a football club called United!
Yes, he was a bit of a heartthrob, but I seem to recall that in real life he was very far from being a ladies’ man.

As an 8 of 9 year old in the late 1950s I was addicted to Emergency Ward 10 🤦‍♀️. Apparently it was one of the first soaps.

I thought Brookside was way ahead of its time. There was a divorce storyline that was on when I was going through a marriage break up and if it wasn’t happening to me I would have thought it was way over the top but it totally reflected my life at the time. It gave me a new found respect for soaps.

Neighbours. I used to watch it with DD when she came in from school.

Snap! I used to watch it with DS when he came back from school - he really liked it.

Mind you, we all liked Red Dwarf as well (space fantasy comedy) but that was later.

I don't know if Yes Minister counts as soaps or Black Adder - I guess not.

On the radio, of course, The Archers, nearly all my life.

Crossroads started about the time we got our first TV in 1964 and I watched it right from the start. As a young teen I'd come home from school and sit down to relax with my favourite show. I absolutely loved it. It was all so new and exciting back then, and I was so young! 😍

BlueBelle Mon 06-Apr-26 00:01:32

Crossroads, Brookside, neighbours for a little while
When I was a child listened with mum to Mrs dales diary and the archers each evening
We never had a tv till after I left home
My Nan and grandad had one when I was about 15 and I used to watch all the cowboy soaps with my grandad Bonanza , Lone Ranger, Rawhide and little house on the prairie is sone I remember

He was married to Sue Lloyd who also appeared in Crossroads. They were a very glamorous couple but sadly he died of cancer in 1991 aged 60 and she died of cancer in 2011 aged 72.

I like The Cedar Tree. It was screened in the early afternoons during the 1970-80’s from what I can remember.

I was also a fan of 'The Cedar Tree.

I also liked 'Dixon of Dock Green.' 'The Benny Hill Show' (shock horror!)

Also 'Z Cars'

Also never missed the early days of 'Coronation Street.'

I'm sure there are others.

hilda123 Thank you. Yes Luss, it is a beautiful place.

NotAGran55 Mon 06-Apr-26 06:51:11

Not a soap, but I loved Crown Court which was on in the afternoon. I worked shifts then and was able to watch it sometimes.

seasider Mon 06-Apr-26 07:11:02

Crossroads, El Dorado and more recently This Life and the American soap Brothers and Sisters.

Calendargirl Mon 06-Apr-26 07:34:24

I liked an American one, on in the late afternoons in the late 70’s/early 80’s.

It was called ‘Family’, starting Sada Thompson, and won many awards.

Nice to watch when preparing tea with the children running around.

Happy days.

Northernsoulnanna Mon 06-Apr-26 07:43:25
