We have been watching the repeats of PAOTY 2020 on Sky Arts as we didn’t see it originally. As a non artist I am absolutely fascinated by the different methods the artists use to start their portraits. Some make very detailed sketches first, others take several photographs of the sitter and others just seem to splosh paint on the canvas. However they all turn out wonderful portraits. Unfortunately we don’t always agree with the judges and are sometimes quite shocked by the ones they pick, but what do we know!

I’m really enjoying this as I never saw the earlier series but I somehow missed the finished portrait of Hilary Mantel yesterday. I think I prefer the earlier series. I do miss seeing Joan Bakewell.

This is being shown on Sky Arts daily at 5pm. I don't remember seeing this first ever programme which had a slightly different format from the later ones. There were 21 artists painting 3 sitters. I am always amazed at the different portraits! It might be of interest to some of you.
